A ten day shutdown of the Rush cigar factory affects nearby rural schools closing in the next three weeks. Local notices report health, hospital, and community events including a High School Glee Club concert and various personal health updates.
A new serial tale, The Return of Anthony Trent, debuts in the Record next week with mystery, adventure, and romance. Readers are invited to follow the opening chapters through to the finale as the story unfolds.
Lititz High School presents a band concert in the school auditorium starting at 8 o clock this evening. The program includes Sousa marches, Strauss waltzes, Chenette selections, Harbach comics, a Reed and Wood ensemble, Mazas movement, Laurendeau overtures, and the Star Spangled Banner.
The Senior Class of the Thigh School will present Daddy Long Legs in the high school auditorium on March 28 and 29. Tickets are 34 cents with reserved seating at Moyer's Drug Store on March 24. A Warwick area sale attracted a large crowd as prices moved on a range of goods. Apples rose from 90 cents to 2.40 a bushel while potatoes advanced from 50 to 95 cents. Bananas sold quickly at 95 cents to 1.60 a bunch. Fresh radishes sold 15 cents a bag, lettuce three heads for 22 cents, and tangerines 35 cents a bag. Pigs and furniture also changed hands, with suckling pigs at 2.25 each and larger pigs at 7.00. Smoked sausage brought 12 to 14 cents a pound and assorted items, from an accordion to household goods, drew varied sums.
Representatives from five churches discussed adopting an evangelistic campaign last Thursday. A 10 member committee, including five pastors and five laymen, was formed to plan time, place, and evangelistic team. Members named are H R Wertsch Hassler Walter Buch Paul Dulabone R M Spacht.
Robert R. Frey, said to live on Lititz Route 8, was held after a second alleged attempt to pass a worthless check led to his arrest at the Lancaster Police Station. He faces a hearing before Alderman David N. Trapnell on forgery charges for checks of 37.50 and 23.50 from Drive-it-Yourself garages.
Fifty Lititz business men met at the Fire House on Tuesday evening and voted to organize a Chamber of Commerce with Robert Pfautz as president and Dr. L N Mover as secretary. J G Forney and Hon B C Atlee spoke, urging cooperation, charter plans, and state and national affiliation. A committee on Ways and Means was named and a progress trip set for Thursday to consult with other chambers.
Onion sets are on display in town at 12 to 15 cents a quart. They are a harbinger of spring and many Lititz residents plan to buy them, hoping fair days are ahead. Rumor says sticking onions may rise in price, so buy early. The piece muses on spring, humor, and the inevitability of onion scent as season turns.
The local post office functions as a hatchery with hundreds of day old chicks arriving daily from Missouri and Minnesota. Mailroom chaos aside, the chicks seek mother and home as clerks endure the chirping. A prior issue was white diarrhoea in shipments, now reduced by blood testing of flocks and state registration.
Relatives received notice of John Cohick of Nevada City Missouri death with burial planned Sunday. His wife Annie Steffy had died six weeks earlier. Surviving children number two. D C Cohick of this place was his brother. John born in E Petersburg, wife born in Lexington. They lived in Lititz three years after early marriage then moved west forty five years ago and did not return.
Carloads of seed potatoes arriving for planting. Edward Heidrich receives five cars of cobblers, two of russets and two of heavy weights. A S Groff of Lancaster also receives an assignment here. John Hess will receive seed potatoes shortly for seventeen carloads. Also promoting Victor Records at Scott's Book Store.
A local craze sees youths breeding white mice and guinea pigs with rapid natural increase. One young man began with seventeen breeders and projects year end growth if conditions hold. The Warwick England letter asks for town news to exchange with nineteen Warwicks worldwide.
A county debates the shift from hand made to machine made cigars. Locals fear job losses and predict a possible return to hand work while noting machines now sort colors. Comparisons are drawn to linotype and reaper tech replacing crafts, with Thomas Keller of Lititz cited as an early machine pioneer.
Nine year old Dorothy Evans of East Main Street is home from Lancaster St Joseph’s Hospital after four days. She had both feet operated on for excess bones in the toes and a needle removed from her heel. Dorothy recovered well and thanks friends and nurses for their support with cards flowers and gifts.
Gill charges of surety of the peace dismissed by Judge Groff in Saturday morning court. Costs awarded against the county. Pfautz Bros. Store advertises new spring and Easter shoes for men women and children.
Thieves stole two tires and two rims from Paul Bushong’s car at his Rome residence last Friday night. Thirty chickens vanished from neighbor M. G. Hess’s premises the same night. This marks the third robbery at these locations since September of last year.
The Ladies Auxiliary of the American Legion turned in five new garments for the Veterans' Orphanage. They will hold a pantry sale on March 24 and are preparing for a public card party to be staged soon. Watch for the date.
Two large flocks of Canadian and yellow billed wild geese passed overhead Sunday morning heading eastward. Locals heard the honking and noted geese move northward, likely turned back by snow, with ducks following their flight. Geese will hatch in North Canada during the summer.
The Willis B. Gochnauer sale of new and used implements at his warehouse drew a large countywide crowd. Auctioneer Snavely reported 350 implements sold, including 32 riding cultivators, 10 mowers, 11 manure spreaders, 12 plows, 3 hay loaders, 5 potato plows, and a tractor. All used machinery sold quickly. one huckster sold out. Clerk J. W. G. Hershey was unwell but stayed to the end.
Seven people were injured in a Sunday automobile crash at Brackbill's Corner at the intersection of the Ephrata Pike and Brownstown road. The Mohler family members and Irene Mohler suffered injuries ranging from skull lacerations to body bruises, while Mrs Frances Binkley was treated for a broken arm and hand cuts after the collision with Sherman Binkley of Mechanicsburg.救
Lititz Boy Scouts will again oversee Lititz Springs Park maintenance for the coming season. Last year progress was slowed by building a log cabin, yet work remained strong and the season stayed long. Many family reunions and picnics are booked, with plans for an out-of-town promoter to run the springs, stage Saturday band concerts, and boost Fourth of July events under the home committee's control.
Friends serenaded and brought flowers to Miss Mary Haverstick a shut-in on E Lincoln Ave last Friday in observance of her birthday. Several callers visited during the day and shared gifts with her.
A lengthy list of regional residents and visitors appears from Lancaster to Philadelphia, with many trips to Lititz for family visits. Names include Mrs. L. K. Grosh, Miss Ida Rudy, Dr. Ebner Reidenbach, Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Singer, Abram Hershey, Abram Lane, and others, detailing departures and welcomes across towns and weekends.
Hon Atlee spoke at the Chamber of Commerce meeting Tuesday and joked about geography. He recounted a Pennsylvania railroad depot decision for Lancaster that locals teased as a Lititz matter, quipping that the depot is at the southern end of Lititz rather than the north end of Lancaster.
