Severe Storm Falls On Lancaster County Area
A historic electrical storm Thursday afternoon lashed Lititz and nearby areas, killing one person, destroying seven barns, and damaging homes and buildings. Lightning struck J A Miksch’s home on South Cedar street, tearing wall and floor coverings, and entering rooms with beds and a new carpet torn by the force. A bolt also struck the Gneida trap factory office, burning insulation and setting off a loud explosion, while another strike hit J W Bruckart’s house, splitting a garret rafter and scattering papers. The storm lasted about three hours with heavy rain, high winds, and dense black clouds, and caused widespread property damage across the county. Continued details on page five.

Fire Scare at Moravian Home Over Fright Fire
A fire scare at the Old Ladies Home on Church street ended quickly after mosquito netting around a chandelier with a lit gas jet ignited. Inmate panic followed by a bystander, Harry Rudy, doused the flame with water, preventing damage as the alarm proved false.

Bell presented to St James Lutheran church Lititz
Dr J C Brobst presented a steel alloy bell from C S Bell Co Hillsboro Ohio to St James Lutheran church Lititz. The 1800 pound, 40 inch diameter bell arrived Saturday and rang Sunday for the first time in the church tower, honoring Rev J W Bittner. The church built in 1905 previously lacked a bell and the gift was gratefully received.

Poultry Purchase At Lititz From Littlestown Buyer
William Mehring of Littlestown York county visited Lititz on Tuesday and bought 24 head of fancy poultry from local breeders. The list includes White Rock varieties, Indian Game, Black Minorca, Black Rose Comb, Langshan, Orpington, Red Pile and Golden Duckwing breeds. Narrow Escape While Felling Tree on Spring Grounds
J B Young narrowly escaped serious injury while felling a tree on the Spring grounds last week. The trunk was cut free but blocked by nearby trees, leaving the remaining section suspended. When workers shortened the suspended limb it fell, striking Young on the head as he jumped from the trestle. He survived with only a shaking and a bruise.

Beck's Concert Band Delights Large Spring Audience
A Saturday evening band concert on the Spring grounds drew a large crowd. The next concert, Thursday July 27, was postponed due to three players missing for Elks convention duties in Atlantic City. Enck Bros. provided their ice cream in the refreshment pavilion for the band's benefit, a recurring gesture welcomed by members.

Death of James O Sturgis. Moravian builder and undertaker
James Orlando Sturgis aged 74 10 21 died at his East Main street home after a long illness. A Moravian descendant and Republican who admired Lincoln he served as tax collector and in church roles. Survived by wife Eliza, three children Horace E Veronica and Albert O., twelve grandchildren and other relatives. Funeral held at Moravian church with interment in Moravian cemetery.

Mrs Mary Kling Dies After Illness at Lititz Borough
Mrs Mary A Kling, 64, died at her East Main street home last Friday after a four day illness from a stroke. Born Bollinger near Eph rata she spent most of life in Lititz and worked at Linden Hall Seminary and Sunnyside College. Widow of Christian Kling who died twelve years ago she was a Moravian church member. Survived by daughters Emma Breneman Mary Gibbes and Katie Frederick all of Lititz.

Burial of George Mearig at Machpelah Cemetery
George Mearig, the man killed on the Pennsylvania Railroad near Lancaster on Tuesday evening July 4, was buried in Machpelah cemetery south of the borough on Friday morning. His Philadelphia family witnessed the services as Rev. George J. Clarke of St. Paul's Lutheran Church presided.

Fine Blackberries Near Speedwell Farms
Mr and Mrs David Frederick along Elizabeth township Speedwell farms yearly harvest a large blackberry crop. On Monday they picked 77 quarts of fine berries assisted by Mrs Sallie Kofroth who gathered 37 quarts in the morning. A sample shown by the Recorn force described the berries as large and luscious with up to twenty on a cluster. Market price reached 10 cents a box or 14 boxes for a dollar in town.

Escaped Inmate From Lancaster Asylum Nabbed at Hallville
An inmate named Wenger from Lancaster County insane asylum escaped Monday morning and spent part of the day at Hallville. D. W. Dietrich alerted authorities, leading to a pursuit by Constable Hacker and Greek. Wenger was found at Trailville in George Shreiner's slaughter house after a chase and was returned to the asylum. Wenger is from the eastern county and had previous escapes.
