Auctioneer Snavely Has Busy Season Ahead

H H Snavely announces a packed sale calendar for January and March with dozens of auctions across Lititz Manheim Rothsville and Brunnerville. He plans long sessions, switching to Pennsylvania German to ease his voice while meeting many rural customers. The report notes other local curiosities at Spring Grounds including a downward growing walkin fern and a California tulip seedling likely introduced via Gen John A Sutter. Clover seed hits record prices at 35 dollars a bushel with alfalfa considered for future sowing. Potatoes planted by hand improve yields in small plots

The method describes planting potatoes by hand and covering with soil in stages. After seedlings emerge, an additional soil layer is added and fertilizer reapplied. This creates two-root systems and more potatoes, suited for small lots and gardens rather than large fields.

Scarcity of game blamed on local sportsmen

A Lexington game warden reports two Lititz men shot a covey of partridges until only one bird remained. He says reducing the covey to five or six would have allowed recovery for next year and more sport. The warden condemns the men as not fitting the town’s leading sportsmen and notes surprise among nearby farmers at the loss of sporting instinct.
