Ira Bucher survived a nearly fatal accident when a rock weighing about three tons fell during cess pool excavation at Lititz public schools. He was buried under earth and rock but rescued through a narrow opening and is recovering with no internal injuries.
A strong oat harvest yields 60 to 65 bushels per acre, outperforming wheat. Potatoes are abundant and large but prices are low, leaving farmers unsure whether to sell now or hold for higher prices. Shipments pay 60 cents a bushel for potatoes. Albert Shenk sold 101 fat cattle to Hoover & Son and moved them to Lancaster by truck. The buyer’s representative was Norman Doster. Melvin Hoover began cutting tobacco over a week ago.

A Lititz meeting at the fire house on Wednesday evening August 27 invites all residents to discuss forming a community show this year. Attendees will decide if Lititz should host such an event and share their views on civic turnout.
The period of warm days gave way to cool conditions as August winds down. A late August drop saw daytime temperatures near 54 degrees and nights in comfortable range. Though tobacco growth suffered, forecasters expect warmer weather to return this week. The record for August once fell to 46 degrees in 1904, with 48 degrees noted in August 1923.
Mr. and Mrs. Ephraim Hisser and their four children left for their home at Hesston Kansas by automobile on Tuesday, planning a two week trip with stops to visit relatives. They had spent several months with Mr. Hisser's parents at Brunnerville. The family traveled east via Ford and will return the same way. Distance to Hesston is about 1600 miles.
The Schwenkenfelders of Penns Grove held a picnic here last Friday, arriving in two large auto buses and over thirty cars, traveling 72 miles one way. Mr and Mrs Kriebel, former residents now living elsewhere, joined the group and Mrs Kriebel stayed several days for a visit.
Rev. H. R. Gibbel will address the state convention of Pennsylvania Mutual Fire Insurance Companies at Gettysburg on the subject Life Guard. He serves as secretary and treasurer of the Litits Agricultural Fire Insurance Company. President J. W. G. Hershey also attends.
Rev Warren Hess and family from Avon PA along with Mr and Mrs J Carpenter Hess of Oklahoma City spent Monday with Misses Lydia and Salinda Hess. Hess teaches French in Oklahoma City. he attended Millersville and PA College and served as an interpreter in France during the war. He moved west two years ago traveling east by car. He was born near Hammer Creek and his parents, Mr and Mrs Samuel Hess, now live in Lincoln.
Seal fisherman N. D. Sturgis returned after a long layoff with a two and a half pound bass. Harry Showers caught four bass, Clayton Schmuch two salmon, as river conditions improved on Saturday.
Carol B. Good and Miss Marie Richwine of Ephrata returned home last Thursday from a roughly 10,060 mile coast to coast auto trip. They had been married for over a year and traveled with Mr. and Mrs. Harry Stoner of Lititz, who paused in Tacoma, Washington. The Stoners run a photo studio there. The travelers kept their dog and used a camping outfit with tents and self cooking throughout the journey.
Hackman's orchestra will furnish the music for the open air concert this Saturday evening. A local organization of talented musicians, it offers a variation from typical band concerts. The Ringgold Band of York, here with thirty men, performed well and drew a crowd despite nearby picnics.
Nine Lititz young men are spending this week at a cottage at Mt Gretna. The group includes Lloyd Hoffman Charles Getz Howard Hackman Luther Ruhl William Fassnacht George Young Frank Eshleman Charles Dussinger and Harland Hoff man. Harland Hoff man serves as cook.
Neffsville Junior High School is ready for occupancy built by Manheim township district. E C Perry of Philadelphia former Lamper Vocational school named principal. Miss Anna May Bassler named domestic science teacher. she is Hood College graduate.
Mr and Mrs Charles L Hacker of Philadelphia spent Monday to Wednesday with his brother in law W M Grube. Hacker, the first apprentice boy to enter the Record office in 1877, now serves as assistant foreman in North American office. They traveled August 10 from Philadelphia by auto visiting Delaware Water Gap Watkins Glen Pocono areas Scranton and Binghamton via Lakes, returning along the Susquehanna trail. Fred Gable, a former Lititz boy now in Los Angeles, visited town Sunday reconnecting old friends and attended a Toronto convention prior.
A tame young turkey near Lincoln Weachter’s home in Lititz forms a strong bond with the family. It seeks attention, sits on laps, follows members around, and only roosts after the family retires. It occasionally plays with a cat and dog but ignores chickens, and its fate remains unclear as it nears maturity.
More than 500 Bomberger family members attended the third annual Bomberger reunion at Fountain Park in Schaefferstown. The event included invocations, welcome remarks, historical talks, songs, and recognitions of family lineage and Civil War era ties. Officers for next year were elected, with Christian Martin Bomberger as president and Henry H. Bomberger as treasurer.
A long list of visitors and travelers spent time in Lititz and nearby towns this week. Philadelphia residents Mrs Morris Seaber and son Richard joined local hosts, with many relatives from Reading Lebanon Harrisburg and New York also noted as guests and returnees. Several individuals traveled to Atlantic City Philadelphia Bethlehem and Charleston area meetings, while others attended camp meetings and conventions or joined excursions and family gatherings.
The local public schools open Tuesday morning September 2 at 8 30. Pupils report to same rooms as last term. beginners six by January 1 1925 report in the auditorium. Parents must send vaccination certificates with beginners. Pupils from other schools report to the office and those with county entrance certificates bring them.
On a motor tour to Niagara Falls and Canada Mr. and Mrs. Harry Reidenbach with Roy Reidenbach travel together. Also joining are Mr. and Mrs. Menno Carpenter with Ruth and Martha, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Shultz, Josephine Bowman and Florence Herr from Lititz. They left Saturday and expect to return next Saturday.
Brownstown advances with three miles of cement sidewalks, 3 to 3 1/2 feet wide with cement curbing. Thomas Steffy and crew of Lititz supervise eight workers pouring and five grading. A $1200 carnival fund assists residents unable to pay, with progress to date a half mile completed.
The Festival for Older Boys and Single Brethren of the Moravian Church will be held this Sunday August 24. The Rev Robert Stansfield of Wisconsin will deliver the sermon at both morning and evening services. Tickets for the Feast will be on sale at Gringrich's Store.
The Oregon U B S Sunday School holds its annual picnic at Scheibley’s Grove Saturday with Lititz band playing at 2:30 pm. Rev A L Warner and Rev S G Kauffman address attendees before a free supper at 4 pm. A meeting Wednesday invites Lititz residents to discuss a Community Show.
A surprise gathering was held at the home of Mrs. Elizabeth Stoner on Broad Street Sunday August 17. Attendees included Mrs. Harry Clair and family from Lititz and Mil ton Grove, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Becker with children from Reinholds, Mrs. John Long and children Norman and Paul from Reinholds, Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin Bouder and children from Mechanicsburg, Mrs. Amanda Solsinger of Mechanicsburg, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Bouwder with son Melvin of Pottsville, Mr. and Mrs. R. J. Olivier and son Kenneth, and Mr. and Mrs. Oliver Landis with Mr. and Mrs. Charles Nixdorf and daughters Angelia and Ruth of Ephrata.
The Lititz Union picnic drew about 2000 attendees last Thursday with games for all ages. Fifteen hundred ice cream tickets were issued, six barrels of coffee served, and abundant peanut scrambles. A religious service closed the day, led by H R Wertsch and featuring a mixed choir, the Lititz band, and remarks from local pastors.
David Hammer of Macy Indiana and his wife visit Mr and Mrs Harry Hacker. Hammer, 68, born at Speedwell Farms, left Indiana at sixteen. He last visited 23 years ago and finds Lititz changed. He recalls the old Speedwell Farms house and notes landmarks vanished. He still speaks Pennsylvania German and likes regional literature.
Residents complain the Eastern town dam area is being used as a general waste dump. Decayed vegetable matter is disposed there causing a strong stench and potential health hazards for locals living nearby. Action urged to remedy the situation.
