A World War I vignette recounts a British machine gun section’s bond with a stray dog named Jim. The dog shares rations, endures rats and rain, and becomes a morale symbol. Jim accompanies men into trenches, aids a wounded comrade, and dies at the front, mourned as a loyal soldier of the king. His grave is marked Private Jim, Machine Gun Company, killed in action April 10 1916.
