Last Saturday evening the Ephrata band gave a high class concert that drew a large crowd. The visiting musicians played with snap and many urged more concerts by Ephrata. This Saturday the Knights of Malta band from Mechanicsburg will perform, promoted as a fine organization.
The Lititz community reports events from family reunions to hospital care and local appointments. The Lutz family reunion on August 7 was canceled. Mrs. Andrew Gochnauer is hospitalized in Lancaster and improving. Frank Foltz of Lancaster has a government wood inspector job in Baltimore. New arrivals include a baby boy and a baby girl. Several residents receive or miss mail, Red Cross contributions are noted, and a prized sword heirloom is mentioned. Local moves include Theodore Vellers returning to Lititz, and J. H. Breitigan recovering from typhoid. Conestoga Traction fare increases take effect. Chautauqua guarantors’ meeting postponed due to illness. Herstey-Seaman buys East Front Street houses. one sold to Clayton Adams. Ushers trip to Conestoga bungalow planned. rabbi Wise once worked in Stamford shipyards. Rain brings relief to crops and cooler temps. Frank Fry of Lititz praises hometown war stories and notes Poultry Show leadership by D. G. Witmyer for Lancaster Fair.
Elam B Palm of Clay township died from wounds received at the front in France his parents Jacob and Clara Palm receive notice from the War Department He was 22 born in Elizabeth township and drafted November 3 last year He served in the 4th Infantry Company I with Harry Rudy his comrade from this borough Also Mentioned are upcoming Moravian church fall lovefeasts where cake and coffee will be eliminated due to wartime sugar and flour shortages
A chimney fire from a wood fire sparked the summer house roof but Christ Yerger and his daughter Mary acted fast with water buckets, saving the Yerger home on East Lincoln avenue. Rev. W. K. Fleck, on vacation, assisted with manual labor and bass fishing between jobs. A Buick chassis auto funeral car built for Undertaker J. S. Good of Reamstown, with ebony panels and cut glass, was shown in Kofroth's Central parade, praised as the finest of its kind.
The food administration imposes a two pounds per person per month sugar limit effective today, lowering July's three pound cap. Housewives must adjust with economy in cooking and table sugar use, as patriotism means complying with the measure.
The Lititz Sunday schools plan their annual picnic on Thursday next, with favorable weather. A committee has arranged a program of entertaining features, the popular band performing on the Spring grounds after noon. Supper will be a main feature. Participating Sunday schools are United Evangelical St Pauls St James Lutheran United Brethren and Reformed.
Our band provided the music at Intercourse for the annual festival of the Fraternal Patriotic Americans. The county’s largest event drew about 8000 attendees in a 20 acre field with 1000 autos. Receipts totaled 1265.60 as 125 gallons ice cream and numerous baked goods and fruit were sold. The band, appearing four years running, is already booked for next year.
A misinterpretation of a food administrator ruling leads to Keller's Bakery closure for 30 days starting August 5. A. R Keller, a noted borough baker, will close his shop while drivers supply bread from another bakery to patrons during the suspension.
The Lititz Record launches a year long Buy in Lititz campaign with weekly forceful cartoons and articles stressing why home merchants deserve citizen patronage. The effort advocates cooperation among merchants and residents to fund town progress, warning mail order shopping harms the community.
A reunion at the home of Mr and Mrs James Sesseman brought together James and his three brothers for the first time in 13 years. Attending were the Sessemans and spouses plus relatives from Lititz Altoona Pittsburgh Reading and other guests for a shared meal prepared by Mrs James Sesseman.
A child welfare exhibit will tour Lancaster county this month to promote infant health during peak mortality. President Wilson has proclaimed Children’s Year. the goal is to save 100000 babies nationwide. Lititz district No 9 hosts meetings with Mrs H J Pierson as district chair. A Lancaster meeting is at the High School auditorium with exhibits at 3 PM and addresses at 8 PM on Wednesday Aug 7 and Rothsville the following evening.
The Oneida Community factory receives a U S government order for woodwork keeping the shop busy through year end. Beginning today milk drops to 10 cents a quart, seven cents below recent levels, following an order by Food Administrator Marvin B Bushang. Prices will rise to 12 cents per quart on September 1. The cut is welcomed by consumers.
Rev. James A. Heitler of Rothsville died suddenly at his home Tuesday evening at 6 15 o clock aged 66 years Heitler a longtime Rothsville citizen was born in Reamstown and conducted a tailoring business later running a general store cigars and furniture ventures He organized a minstrel troupe and built in Rothsville For 30 years he served as United Zion Children minister founding United Zion Home for the Aged at Pleasant View in 1905 He married Mary Speran in 1869 and Elizabeth Brubaker in 1918 survivors include Elizabeth and three children who died in infancy Funeral services will be held Saturday at his house at 10 00 A M and United Evangelical Church at 10 30 A M Interment at Middle Creek cemetery Rev H P Hagner to officiate
Death of former Lancaster resident Mrs Susan G Brown aged 51 from heart trouble at home on Monday. Born in Talmage to Edward and Mary Studenroth, she lived in Akron and Lititz before moving to Lancaster. Survived by husband Thomas C Brown, daughters Gertrude Albright and Ellen Mary, one grandchild Miriam B Albright, and several siblings. Funeral at 2 PM from the late home with interment in Lancaster cemetery.
Arthur G Williams, 62, inmate at United Zion Home north of Lititz, died Friday July 26 from a stroke suffered two days earlier. A Newport News, Virginia native, he had resided at the home since February 1917 and was held in high esteem. Body shipped to Newport News for interment on Saturday.
Mrs Ann Peter Bard aged 91 11 months died last Thursday morning at Oregon. She was in her 92nd year. She leaves sons Wesley Bard Fort Riley Kansas Wilson Bard Oregon and Adam Bard Minnesota and sister Lizzie Keller Millway. Funeral from her son's home Oregon Saturday afternoon followed by Bergstrasse church services and burial in the adjacent cemetery.
Phares Frey, 29, proprietor of the Keystone hotel in Manheim, died from a gunshot wound suffered during a Sunday groundhog hunting trip near E. K. Zartman’s mill in Elizabeth township. His gun discharged as it fell, wounding Frey in the leg and arm. he died Monday morning at Lancaster General Hospital after efforts to halt bleeding failed. Surviving are his wife Lizzie Dissinger, one son Carl, and numerous relatives including Norman Frey and several siblings. Funeral planned at Fairview cemetery, Manheim.
Names of visitors and locals fill Lititz town life with travel chatter and relatives. Philadelphia, Watertown, Ephrata, Lancaster, Reading, Norfolk, Syracuse, and Columbia figures appear among guests and hosts. August plans include Mount Gretna trips and summer outings with Farm Woman Society activities noted.
A patriotic campaign urges Lititz area women aged 19 to 35 to enroll as student nurses to free graduate nurses for the front. Lancaster county quota is 55. aims to fill by August 7 through Mrs. J. C. Jenkins or Mrs. H. J. Pietok. If unable to go, encourage friends to participate.
Barbara Collms aged 84, an inmate of United Zion Home north of Lititz, fell while a child hugged her from behind. She broke the large bone of the right thigh and was taken to Lancaster General Hospital where she is reported as doing as well as can be expected for her age. A robin at Ivan Buckwalter’s Broad street home appears blind, noted by Dr. D C Martin after observing its actions.
Walter McCreary and family of Vermilion Ohio spoke of a summer bug that lands from Lake Erie and dies soon after. Specimens show bodies about an inch long with two large wings. The bugs are harmless and sometimes leave large corpses hauled away by wagon.
The tenth Fasnacht family reunion drew about 200 members on Saturday with morning and afternoon sessions filled by patriotic fervor. Many attendees linked to service raised hands. the Ken offering split with the Red Cross totaled over $30. Revs. Fleck and Harper gave stirring addresses. Lititz will host next year’s gathering on the last Saturday in July.

Clayton Bomberger, Philadelphia draft board captain, enters national army after Philadelphia commission house tenure and Camp Wadsworth assignment. Emery Neidermyer, naval repair ship crew, may be overseas with friends Ralph Diehmn, blue overalls inapplicable due to color rules, no home return in over a year. Sergeant Rey O Hassler at Wright Field provides The Wright Idea weekly. John L Balmer enlists in Naval Reserves after hospital operation. brother Galen Balmer in infantry overseas. Robert R Bach among eight sent to Camp Lee for training. John K Miller Lititz route 5 and Denver’s Guy Bard, former Warwick High principal, also in the group.
Thomas Haisch, valedictorian class of 1903, writes from Camp Lee Virginia to sister Mrs. S M Huber. He joins the Medical Department and reports daily drills and 3 to 6 mile hikes. He describes warm days and cool nights, a nearby Y M C A visit by Rev Stuart Cramer, and a camp of about 300 cowboys from Montana Colorado and the Dakotas. The cowboys wish to wear their hats and saddles from home, with saddles costing 60 to 100 dollars and some men worth up to 200000. He notes 19 men share a barracks with 18 windows open to breezes, making it feel almost outdoors.
