Sabbath of Light Observances in Jerusalem Holy Week

Pilgrims from Christian and Muslim faiths visit the Jordan River during Holy Week in Jerusalem. Greek patriarchs perform foot washing for 12 pilgrims on Holy Thursday outside the cathedral, while Catholic and Armenian ceremonies inside are not open to the public. The week features services from six to midnight on Good Friday and a March night ritual on Holy Saturday, when lamps and fires are relit from a flame believed to appear on the holy sepulcher. The resurrection service ends with pilgrims departing, and foreign visitors are welcomed mainly for trade rather than full participation in local life.
