A history of the Lititz telephone, from 1885 to today, tracing the growth of the local system and town. Grace Keller, one of the first operators, recalls the switchboard, crank calls, and later modern central office upgrades reflecting Lititz’s development.
The town recalls Frances Anderson once famed as a champion woman billiard player who lived as a man named Man Anderson. He killed himself by slashing wrists and throat after decades of masquerade. A farewell letter asked secrecy, and a local stranger’s remark about the case adds to the tale of hidden identity.
Renovation and sterilization of tobacco beds are under way in this county section. Beds are prepared and soil steaming units operate while spraying apparatus is used. Tobacco experts’ advice is increasingly heeded this spring with scientific growing methods. Steaming outfits report higher demand than before as a disease control measure. Spraying and relocating beds are also used to curb wildfire and rust.
The Greist Bill authorizes a $2,500 appropriation to erect a tablet in Lititz Pennsylvania marking the burial place of 110 American soldiers wounded in the Battle of Brandywine who died at Lititz hospital. The measure goes to the Senate. A temporary plaque already marks the Revolutionary War soldiers’ graves on East Main Street by the Daughters of the American Revolution.
The A B C oil burner sold by Automatic Heating and Refrigerating Co. was shown on Springs Hotel lawn on Monday and Tuesday. Residents asked questions to learn about heating. The unit, automatic and ashless, is safe and approved by Underwriters Laboratories. A Lancaster heating staff serves the area with Cullen Carpenter in charge of Lititz and nearby. The burner has been in use eight years.
A fire started by burning rubbish damaged the roof of a chicken house on Christ Risser's farm northeast of Brunnerville yesterday afternoon. The Lititz Fire Company arrived too late to save the building as onlookers gathered by car.
William Fry begins excavation for a house and public garage on East Main Street near the Drs. Bender homes. He plans to sell oil gasoline and refreshments and will remove automobiles.
Real Estate Sales Huebener and Habecker report the sale of a Jet on North Cedar street for Dr. C. BE. Lane to the Consumers' Boxboard and Paper Co. Also sold a storage warehouse and Jot on North Alley to the same Company. Possession will be given at once.
Adolph Merkel and his family prepare to leave Lititz for Germany by motorcar and ship transit. He sold half a double house on Second Avenue to Sylvester Furlow and will crate his motorcycle to travel 1500 miles from the German port to his former home. Merkel built and ran a Lititz cabinet shop before leaving, returned later with prospering fortunes, and intends to come back.
Deputy Grand Commander Sir Walter R Hepler installed the officers of White Cove Commandery No 5382 on Thursday evening. Charles H. Regennas received a consignment of Bermuda onion plants from Texas. They are offered at 18 to 35 cents a hundred and described as plantlike and edible soon after growth begins. When mature they reach a large size and can be used on the table like spring onions all summer.
Members from Lititz including John Fleischman Harry Wike and Nevin Bachman attended the Underwriters Association gathering at the Hotel Bruns wick in Lancaster where Col Taggert Pennsylvania Insurance Commissioner was the keynote speaker. Jacob Eshleman and William Miksch joined a banquet at the Hotel Brunswick the prior evening hosted by Hoffman Automatic Heat Control Co with three moving picture reels demonstrating the system. A garage owned by J Irvin Huber of Brickerville burned to the ground Saturday morning with a $3000 truck and bus inside destroyed. the truck was not insured and a touring car was saved. Fire units from Ephrata Lititz and Lincoln fought the blaze.
A dealer, Charles Weaver, acquired an antique Wheeler and Wilson sewing machine patented in 1851. The aged device remains serviceable but differs in design from modern machines. Rememberer at Easter time with Whitman’s chocolates noted.
Prices in anthracite coal cut 75 cents to 1 a ton went into effect in local yards on Monday. Reductions this year are larger than last year and residents with dwindling stocks welcome the drop. Nut stove and egg now 75 cents a ton pea coal 1.00 a ton. Coal has been arriving in Lititz since the price cut in better condition than before.
Four young men from Lititz and Manheim were held for the next term of court after a hearing before Alderman Trapnell Lancaster. They confessed to stealing poultry from multiple farms including Eckert Wenger Bomberger Weidman and Fahnestock. Frecht denied involvement. County Detective Forrest and Constable Bauer led the investigation.
The article notes historic April 1 financial practices with bankers working late and deeds transferring as a main rule. It recalls annual settling of shop, mill, and other bills, now replaced by discount driven terms and short durations. Most April 1 activity occurred on Saturdays.
St Pauls Lutheran Church and Sunday School in this borough observed their annual egg day on Sunday. Two and a half crates of eggs were received and shared with local institutions. A crate to Topton orphanage, a crate to Loysville orphanage, and half a crate to Lancaster General Hospital. The Mennonite group in this place also contributed a half crate for the hospital.
Contemplating Easter, residents anticipate pleasant weather and new spring finery. Students return for vacation and visitors are expected. Sunday Schools and churches planned fine programs. Moravians will hold a sunrise service at 5 15 AM with a lovefeast Saturday at 3 PM. A trombone choir of about thirty will tour town at 3 PM playing Easter hymns.
A long list of visitors and locals travel and host over the week. William Peacock spends Tuesday in Philadelphia while Reading residents and Lancaster natives visit town or stay at the Springs Hotel. Easter vacation plans bring students and graduates home, with hunting trips and hospital nurse Florence Keller among those mentioned.
The Lititz Fire Company considers buying a new Seagrave thousand gallon pumper as part of a campaign spurred by county and local fire officials. A recent Brickerville fire damaged property. funds of about ten thousand dollars are sought, with three thousand already on hand. Publicity Chair Claude Miller and C. E. Regennas urged community support via bank contributions.
