A jumble of 1987 classified items notes transfers and hauling services by W H Wakefield, sale of used radios by F E Meng, auto service at City Service Station, bulk garden supplies by Green County Farm Bureau, plant sales by Lizzi Davis, wallpaper sale by Chas Criss, a Delux DeSoto for sale, a found sack of feed, and a rental notice for 3 rooms plus a note about Chinese police destroying idols.
Weather permitting work began this afternoon after the Linton city council awarded the oiling contract to Steve Stalcup. About 40 000 gallons will be applied to dustproof the streets, with trucks ready to start Saturday. Stalcup’s bid was the lowest, and completion is hoped for by late next week if the weather stays fair. Autoists are asked to avoid parking on unpaved streets during oiling.
Miss Thelma Powell, local 4-H leader, announces a meeting for 4-H club girls at 2 o'clock Tuesday afternoon in the Linton high school building and asks all girls to be present.
An ordinary US nickel contains 75 percent copper and 25 percent nickel. The ratio defines its metallic make up and informs minting practices.
May 22 report from Monts France says the Duke of Windsor, anxious over a British government boycott of his wedding, has taken up knitting. He made a wool sweater in the new Wally Blue shade for Wallis Warfield, finished last night and given this morning.
Andris Buckner of Worthington has been named assistant athletic coach at Ashland High School. Chosen from 60 applicants, he will head track and assist football and basketball. Buckner brings a strong coaching record from Ravenna where his teams won 75 percent of football games and 70 percent of basketball. He is a graduate of Indiana State Teachers College.
A county wide Boy Scout rally and Flag Day observance are planned at the Linton Sout camp near here on Saturday June 12. Scouts will meet at noon with gear for an overnight encampment. Activities include field day contests signaling first aid knot tying and races followed by an evening campfire and a church service on Sunday morning. Attendees at the planning meeting included Addison Stewart William Walters Calvin Griffith and several area clergy.
Marion Hoops and Cleo Bar nett, formerly of this city, are visiting Mr. and Mrs. John Barnett over the weekend. They depart Monday for Milwaukee to join the circulation department of the Milwaukee Journal after some years with a Fort Wayne newspaper.
Greene county officials await an Evansville hospital report before acting on Gordon Bland of Worthington who faced a lunacy commission after claiming he started three to four fires. The commission report was sent to Evansville and Bland, jailed in Bloomfield, reportedly tore up his cell on Tuesday.
The 1937 Linton high school senior class dance is moved to Thursday night May 27 at the Elks Home ballroom. Gamma Tau Tri Kappa sorority hosts the graduates as the IU campus orchestra led by Billy Pirtle’s Bandolier provides music with special features for attendees from Linton and nearby towns.
Jage Neumeyer of Indianapolis was admitted today for treatment at a local hospital.
Funeral services for John O Jewell a Worthington retired railroad worker who died Tuesday of heart disease were conducted Friday at Myers funeral home in Worthington He was brother of Fred Jewell famed bandmaster and composer Surviving relatives include his widow and three sisters Mrs Jess Walters Terre Haute Mrs Frank Nease Cincinnati Ohio and Mrs Ella Myers Worthington
A WPA project to improve Jasonville sanitary conditions mobilizes 21 workers. The plan converts 3000 feet of existing storm sewer to storm sewer only and adds 3000 feet of new sanitary sewer across 10 connections, with six months to completion. Sponsored by the Jasonville Industrial Bureau with city cooperation, funding totals 5886.40 dollars including 400 local and 5486.80 federal.
President Roosevelt outlined his legislative program and said speculation on the new justice is premature. A Senate judiciary committee anti administration majority prepared an unfavorable report on the court reorganization bill to be sent to the Senate within about a week.
A Greene Circuit court jury returned a verdict in favor of Fred W. Matmiller in the $15,000 damage suit brought by Anna Fink of Monroe County. The 69-year-old widow claimed injuries from a April 8, 1935 automobile school bus collision nine miles northwest of Bloomington on the Bloomington Gosport road.
Milwaukee May 22. About 800 newspaper circulation managers from the United States and Canada will meet in Milwaukee for their annual convention June 15 16 and 17. Topics include possible newspaper price raises due to rising production costs and Social Security Act welfare legislation affecting circulation employees. Also rising newsprint costs tops the discussion. In Champagne France every child is given a drop of champagne at birth.
Linton plans commencement Tuesday at the high school auditorium for 100 seniors with Dr. J. Raymond Shutz of Manchester College delivering the address. The program includes processional Torchlight, Tschaikowsky Sleeping Beauty, Polka Dots, and awards. Honor roll members listed. Baccalaureate service Sunday at 7:30 with Rev. Hofmann presiding and high school orchestra providing music.
L. M. Newkirk, Sandborn filling station owner, was injured when a man crouching in his back seat struck him after closing the station. Newkirk was knocked from his car, dazed briefly, and the assailant fled before help arrived.
More than 400 striking miners at Superior Coal Mine No 1 Wilsonville relayed from the bath house as talks with management showed willingness to negotiate. In Pittsburgh a contract for 27,000 Jones & Laughlin Steel employees was expected to be signed Monday after an organizing victory. Henry Ford workers seek their own union as Hiomer Martin of the UAW vows support. In Indianapolis, Indiana rail service resumed after a nine week strike with a wage increase and reinstated contract.
Wes McGlasson former Pike County deputy treasurer who vanished last November reappeared in Petersburg Indiana May 22 announcing he would fight any charges. Bonding company covered an $8000 bond after shortages totaling 5,551 and 400 were found in the treasurer’s books. He said he planned to return to Petersburg for state examiner oversight but flood and illness delayed him.
