Washington, May 7. The air force orders 2,727 planes for delivery in 18 months to nearly double offensive power and start a five year plan for 70 groups. The Navy buys about 1,500 planes. The bill funds 243 bombers 1,575 jet fighters and 99 support aircraft.
Jacob G. Breden, 79, lifelong Beech Creek township resident, was found dead in bed at his home this morning. The body was taken to Jenkins Funeral Home in Bloomfield for funeral arrangements pending.
The Elite club meeting scheduled for next Wednesday is postponed until May 26. The gathering will be at the home of Mrs Wilbur Wilkey.
A large attendance gathered at the Greater Linton club in the I O O F hall for a May meeting focused on entertainment. Dave and Pauline Coleman presented Sophisticated Mystification including the Hindu rope trick. A street signs display by a salesman was the sole business item while a committee negotiated proposed street market purchases for Linton.
Evangelist J G Penner will broadcast on WSUA Bloomington Sundays from 9 30 to 10 00 AM. The Bible Auditorium of the Air program presents his talk this Sunday titled How Close Are We to the End of the World.
Mrs Jack Kirby had major surgery at Mary Sherman hospital in Sullivan Wednesday morning. Her condition is listed as fair. Friends may write to Room 2138.

Attorney General Tom C. Clark told President Truman that the government has ample authority to seize the strike-threatened railroads under the 1916 act. He noted seizure would follow if unions and carriers fail to settle, as cabinet talks and talks with union leaders continued amid efforts to avert a nationwide strike.
New Albany Indiana May 7 Henry T and John W Merritt must decide whether to take 5000 each or refuse. Their grandmother Mrs Tella Knoefel left a will granting 5000 to each grandson but if declined would place securities in a lock box at a New Albany bank with no description of value or nature.
The Alpha Delphian club will meet at the Conservation Club House Tuesday evening at 6 30 for a covered dish supper. Members are asked to bring their favorite dish to share.
Verle McDowell a 33 year old inmate at Evansville State Mental Hospital confessed to raping and beating to death 43 year old Anna Mae Ligon in a basement corridor. Police noted his swollen scratched hands and a note exchange with Dr Cheeng indicating the confession and description of the attack.
The Alpha Chapter of Triad will present its annual festival of song Sunday at 7 30 pm in the local Evangelical United Brethren Church. A 43 voice chorus directed by Miss Hildred McDonald with Miss Ruth Marie Fritz and Mrs. Orville Coleman as accompanists will perform solos by Mrs. Bert Barnes and Mrs. Herbert Priest. A sextette will sing with eight additional numbers including a dedication to Mrs. Wayne Hamilton, founder of Triad, and a benediction by Rev. William Medcalf. The public is invited.
Mrs. Crystal Fisher of Bloomfield was admitted for medical treatment yesterday. A boy was born today to Mrs. Geneva Johnson of Bloomfield. Luther Lent of Linton transferred to Glen Evening Rest Haven. Mrs. Wayne Baize and baby moved to their home in Crane. Mrs. Ruth O'Dell and baby taken to their home in Sandborn today.
Southern coal operators framed a plan aiming to prevent a miners strike as a new agreement with United Mine Workers was set to begin negotiations May 18. The present contract expires June 30 and Southern producers account for about 150 million tons of annual soft coal output. Lewis appeals the 80 day no strike injunction and contempt fines in a separate court fight.
The Dugger Church of Christ will run a Daily Vacation Bible School for two weeks starting Monday morning at 8:30. Each day lasts two and a half hours with Bible study singing recreation and handwork and Genesis will be studied. A diploma will be presented to students meeting requirements and a program by the children will be held Friday night May 21. All children over four are invited.

At the request of Congressman Gerald W Landis the Civil Service Commission will hold a Congressional examination on July 12 1948 at the Bloomington and Vincennes post office buildings to select Seventh Indiana District appointees for the classes of 1949 at the Military and Naval academies. Applicants must submit full details to Congressman Landis by May 31 1948. Richard George Inman of Vincennes and William H Geatches of Linton have passed final admission for West Point and will join the academy on July 1.
Indiana's state quota for Savings Bond sales is 76.5 million dollars with 42.53 thousand dollars in Series E bonds. A kickoff luncheon begins Friday as the drive runs to June 30, with Eugene C. Pulliam as principal speaker.
Members of the Linton Girl Scouts underMrs Garland Ladson and Mrs Bert Barnes will sell tags on downtown streets Saturday to raise funds for the Cancer Control drive. Girls meet Zieglers store at 8 am for supplies and instructions. Public support is urged.

Five passengers forced the Czech airliner crew to divert from Czechoslovakia to the American zone in Germany. A former RAF pilot led the hijack with a pistol, steering the aircraft south over the Soviet zone of Austria and into Munich. The two crewmen deny involvement and wish to return to Czechoslovakia. Four passengers aimed for Sweden and Canada while the former RAF pilot sought England.
In Kodiak Alaska on May 7 the coast guard cutter Bittersweet reached the stranded cannery tender Tootsie and started freeing her from an ice jam that held 13 crew for two days. The cutter cut a path 25 miles toward Port Heiden Bristol Bay as the Tootsie neared shore under its own power.
Arlene Gibson aged 23 was fined 100 dollars and jailed 30 days for petty larceny after stealing jewelry from Mrs. E. M. King and wearing it to a policeman's hall in Lincoln Nebraska.
