Poland today refused Hitler’s one sided demand for Danzig and a Nazi highway across the Polish corridor while offering peaceful talks to settle the quarrel. Foreign Minister Beck spoke to a cheering parliament and readiness to confer dictatorial powers on President Moscicki for the emergency. Parliament then submitted emergency decrees to a committee for approval as deputies cheered Moscicki and Poland.
A motion to suppress evidence in State of Indiana v Frank Bruner was sustained by Judge J Raymond Powell in Greene circuit court Bloomfield. Bruner fined 25 dollars and 60 days on the Indiana Penal farm after a Mayors Court trial on February 9. The appeal follows a raid January 20 at 40 F street southwest alleged as Io street southwest with calls to suppress all raid observations and seized items. Trial set for June 5 in county court.
Hartford, Conn. A stranger entered Morris Yaffe's tailor shop to use the washroom. As he left, Yaffe noted the man looked fatter and invited him for a beer. The thief departed with a $25 suit worn under the stranger's clothes.
Max Rodecker of Switz City underwent a major operation. Miss Dorothy Eslinger of Dugger has been admitted for treatment. Visiting hours are 2-4 and 7-8:30 p.m.
Funeral services for Mrs. Clara Barnardi of Terre Haute rural route 5, a former Linton resident, will be held at 2:00 PM Saturday from the Thomas funeral home. Burial will follow in Roselawn Memorial Park cemetery. She was born Clara Nocus and moved from Linton to Bicknell about 20 years ago.
London May 5. Great Britain informed Moscow that currently she cannot accept Russia and France military alliance. Viscount Halifax sent the reply to Sir William Leeds after approval by the foreign committee. The answer opens a theoretical door to a future arrangement and Halifax plans talks with Molotov and Maisky.
Members of the Linton Stockton high school HI Y club elected Harold Harting president Roy OHaver vice president Raymond Correll secretary Donald Baugaman treasurer and Harold Wright sergeant at arms to serve during the coming year.
United Press reports thirty two Japanese planes attacked Chongqing harming the business and residential districts. Foreigners and Americans in danger as fires spread with high winds. about three thousand Chinese killed or wounded. Separately London dispatch says Repulse to convoy Empress of Australia for the royal voyage to America.
London faced a heightened security alert as Ireland's outlawed Irish Republican Army invoked a call to arms. In Britain, a force of twelve thousand policemen including four thousand special constables patrolled London through the night amid mounting outrage and disruption.
Rep C Arthur Anderson of Missouri pressed for a House inquiry into the National Labor Relations Board and for removal of current members. He urged shifting NLRB judicial power to courts while testifying as the second witness at Wagner act revision hearings in Washington. In Kentucky miners faced mine violence as state troopers armed with submachine guns guarded Packard and Gatliff areas after clashes. Gov Chandler sent reinforcements following injuries to deputies.
The Senate Military Affairs Committee backed a measure by Sen. Josh Lee to draft wealth as well as men in a war emergency. It would authorize a wealth census to classify citizens by net worth and require those above $1,600 to buy 50 year bonds funding war needs, bearing 1 percent interest.
Final contests are scheduled for 1 pm Saturday at Central School in Linton for the Stockton township Wop scotch and marble run offs. The public is invited to witness the run offs where champions from Stockton township and Linton grade schools will compete for the Stockton township title.
The Linton Indiana state ritualistic degree team, titled state champions for 1937 and 1938, will lead initiation ceremonies next Wednesday at Bloomington to mark the dedication of the new Bloomington Elks lodge home. Bloomington lodge designates the event Linton night and plans to host visiting members while the Linton lodge cancels its regular meeting to attend.
WPA workers overhaul Humphreys park also known as Linton City park to greet a summer opening. Improvements include shrub planting benches signs tourists welcome, a new doll house, a mini wading pool, a stone refreshment stand, a saddle barn for ten horses, a large slide, and a park plan designating youth use while the old Lin-Stock park hosts adult athletics.
Wage hour negotiators for the Appalachian soft coal industry will persist with talks after a breakdown earlier today. John L. Lewis of the United Mine Workers and Charles ONeill of the operators named new committees to resume negotiations spurred by federal conciliator John R. Steelman who warned the nation against civil war in the coal fields.
About 9,800 United Mine Workers members in Indiana quit today as John L. Lewis called a nationwide strike against coal producers. However roughly half of these Hoosier miners had been employed in southern Indiana coal fields in recent months.
Mrs Sara Mason 79 widow of J B Mason former Switz City postmaster died after a week long illness from a stroke suffered April 26. Born July 20 1859 in Bloomfield she spent most of her life in the county. Funeral at 3 Sunday in Switz City Methodist church with burial in Switz City cemetery Davidson Funeral Home Lyons in charge.
