The local coal market shows one of its best periods, helped by a prior East shutdown that diverted supply. Nationally, first quarter 1939 profits rise about 40 percent with auto and steel gains, signaling gradual improvement and a cautious outlook for 1939. Local motorists should note clarified Indiana laws on arm signals and driving procedures.
The National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics plans to ask President Roosevelt to back five new aeronautic research centers inclining toward a Midwest lab near Chicago. They aim to restore Sunnyvale California as a research center and seek funding for this national defense program. A House panel also advanced a bill to spend 6.66 million dollars to modernize five 35 000 ton battleships.
Harold Miener of Linton was praised by President Herman B Wells for high scholarship during IU Foundation Day at Bloomington. Washington May 5 Industrial leaders Heacock of Peoria and Carey of New York spoke before a business forum criticizing the National Labor Relations Board. They urged amendment of the Wagner act, arguing the board increases labor strife and undermines democracy, hurting productivity and jobs.

Mrs Roy Williams underwent a minor operation this morning. Miss Eunice Price of Bloomfield route 4 had a major operation Tuesday. Judith Ann Hull daughter of Dr and Mrs King Hull of Bloomfield sustained elbow injury but X rays showed no fracture and she was sent home. Ray Pierson of Bloomfield route 1 employed at Bloomfield Brick Co injured right elbow, admitted for X ray observation, later discharged. no fracture found.
Final contests to crown a marble artist champion and hopscotch winner will be held Saturday at the Central school building. Elimination rounds conducted by the county Recreation Department include 300 marble and 375 hopscotch participants from Linton and township schools with city students joining in.
A grass fire began on lots at Seventh Street northeast and drew Linton city firemen at 6:50 PM Tuesday. Cause undetermined, but damage was minimal.
Fire of undetermined origin Tuesday heavily damaged an eight room residence belonging to O. BR Laughlin a Newberry druggist. Firefighters from Lyons arrived too late to save the home and most of the household furnishings were destroyed.
Police responded to a call of murder in Cambridge and found the disturbance came from 66 chickens kept by a tenant for eggs. Officer James Shea ordered the apartment cleared of hens to make it a suitable living space.
Play ball opens for the Miners at Humphreys park Sunday at 2 30 pm in a 1939 schedule kickoff against the Lawrenceville HL Moose. Roy Trent former local pitcher handles for Illinois. Miners lineup to be announced. Lawrenceville sluggers boost the visiting roster. Two practice sessions planned at Lin-Stock and Humphreys diamonds before Sunday opener.

Four foreign ministers from Sweden Norway Denmark and Finland reportedly planned a Stockholm meeting on Tuesday to discuss Adolf Hitler's reciprocal nonaggression proposal. Helsinki indicated Finland and Sweden were already exchanging views while Danish officials said a meeting next week would consider the German plan for a northern neutral bloc to guard Germany's northern flank in case of war.

Funeral services for Mrs Eva Davis 47 wife of Sam Davis of this city were held this afternoon from the family residence with burial in Fairview cemetery. She is survived by the husband and her mother Mrs John Kent two daughters Mrs Kenneth Jamison of Warsaw and Mrs Arthur Squires of Poplar Bluff Mo two sisters Mrs Thomas Hall of Linton and Mrs Marie Valandingham of Muncie five brothers Will Wright of Terre Haute Wayne Wright of Sturgis Fred Wright of Muncie and Tom and George Wright of Linton.
Mayor E V Bull proclaims May 8 13 as clean-up week in Linton urging residents to cooperate. City street trucks will collect rubbish in containers accessible to crews. Afterward two firemen will inspect for fire hazards over four days to recommend improvements.
