Last day for spring tax payments passed with many delinquents unable to raise funds but overall fewer than expected. An extension to May 8 was later granted to ease pressure. The piece reflects on Carlisle's early history and local lore, including old landmarks and railroad nostalgia.
Stockton township residents may pay delinquent dog taxes before May 165 at J. Everett O'Connor's residence located at the intersection of state road 50 and Glenburn road. Delinquent taxes may also be paid to J. Lowrie Mattox in his office on the second floor of the old Linton Trust Company building A and Main streets.
Mrs John H Steward of Jasonville rural route was in Linton on business today.
Greene county agricultural agent Arthur Haseman estimates the recent White river flood damaged about 2 000 acres of oats 1 000 acres of wheat and 700 acres of alfalfa about one tenth of 1938 losses. Early spring floods allowed reseeding with soybeans corn and other crops despite bright sun after waters receded.
Washington May 2 The Works Progress Administration ordered a 200 000 reduction in federal relief quotas bringing WPA enrollment to 2 6 million by May 25 The cut follows April reductions after Congress trimmed 50 million from Roosevelt relief funding. An additional 200 000 cut is planned for June to reach 2 4 million by July 1
Milton Bogard Greene county treasurer announced an extension for tax payments to Monday May 8 due to many taxpayers yet unpaid. He warned this will be the final deadline and no further extensions will be granted.
Glenburn boys Bobby Tendick and Bob Hopkins found a dry land terrapin in Summit woods northwest of the city. The shell bears the name Ray Winters-1929. They believe the turtle has lived in the area for years while they were mushroom hunting on Saturday.
Mrs. Eva Davis 47 of 330 E Street Northeast died Monday after months of illness. Born January 31 1892 in Shoals she lived in Linton for 28 years and belonged to the International Bible Students. She is survived by husband Sam Davis two daughters two parents two sisters five brothers two step sisters and a step brother. Funeral at 1 30 Wednesday at the Davis residence with International Bible Students officiating burial in Fairview cemetery Newkirk Funeral Home Pleasantville in charge.
Mrs Kate Newkirk 71 a longtime Linton area resident died at 6 00 this morning at her home after a brief illness. Born Sept 29 1867 in Sullivan county she married C H Newkirk Oct 11 1888 and they celebrated their 50th anniversary last year. Surviving are her husband two sons Ray of Pleasantville and Scott of Linton rural route one brother James McCammon of Carlisle rural route one two grandchildren and a Stafford Chapel funeral is set for 2 00 Thursday with burial in Stafford cemetery.
Mrs Lloyd Parson of Lima Ohio was taken to her mother in laws home in Bloomfield for observation. Mrs Al Williams of Bloomfield admitted for X Ray observation after a hand injury from a fall Monday evening. She was released after treatment. Miss Rosalee Fuller of Bloomfield admitted for X Ray observation and a cast placed on a broken ankle. Elizabeth Ann Bohley daughter of Harold Bohley of Linton Route 1 had X Ray of an ankle and was released. Mrs Stella Hudson of Switz City remains about the same. Lorene Griner of Jasonville submitted to a blood transfusion and was taken to her home this afternoon.
Indiana and Illinois officials pursue extradition of Claude Dickerson a reputed gangster wanted for the 1956 Birmingham State Bank cashier murder. Townsend granted the request from Madison County Illinois authorities. Dickerson captured in Flushing New York and brought back for trial.
Several members of the Linton Rotary club and their Rotary Anns attended a 6:30 dinner hosted by the Sullivan Rotarians and their Anns at the Sullivan Methodist church. A program followed the meal presented by the Sullivan group.
On May 2 at Langley Field Virginia Col. Charles A. Lindbergh told government officials and experts that the United States must immediately expand aviation research facilities or will be unable to match European powers within five years. He spoke privately during a dinner aboard a Potomac river steamer en route from Washington to the aviation center. He attended a demonstration by the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics with about 400 others.
Former governor Paul V. McNutt, U S commissioner to the Philippine Islands, will learn in about a week when he will return from Manila. Democratic National Committeeman Frank McHale, who is arranging McNutt's 1940 presidential candidacy, says McNutt has reservations about a May 11 boat sail but has not decided.

Detroit May 2 Lou Gehrig benchs himself after a long career with the New York Yankees asking Manager Joe McCarthy to remove him from the lineup. His bat and legs, once feared, are described as gone during the May 2 game against the Detroit Tigers.
A joint Japanese army and navy statement issued in Shanghai on May 2 demanded suppression of all anti-Japanese activities in the city. It included a warning against incitement by citizens of third powers and was seen as an implied threat to occupy the foreign settlement and the French concession.
U S Sen Hiram W Johnson Republican California urged Congress to stay in session to keep the United States out of war He warned that declaring war could lead to a dictatorship If war is pursued to destroy European dictators Johnson argued adjournment would be premature and the people look to Congress for leadership in peace

Operators warn of a potential soft coal industry shutdown if no deal by Friday. In Washington, AFL president William Green says peace prospects with CIO remain as strong as ever.
Members of the Linton Eagles lodge were urged to attend a district meeting and initiation at the Bloomington lodge hall at 7 30 p m Representatives from all district lodges are expected to be present and as many Linton members as possible were asked to attend Election of 1939 40 officers for the Linton Aerie will be held at the local lodge on Wednesday night with all members urged to attend.
The Worthington yard reports an all time high 88 coal cars transferred from Pennsylvania to New York Central this week while 114 cars moved from New York Central to Pennsylvania. Agent Daubenspeck calls it a record for coal car transfers amid rising mining activity across Greene Sullivan Pike and Daviess Knox counties with mines working night and day.
Warsaw May 2 The government will ask parliament to grant President Ignacy Moscicki emergency powers through November 1 1939 to regulate all economic financial and defense matters without parliamentary action except changing the zloty value. The move follows pension tensions over Danzig and cabinet approval of the bill text this morning.
Secretary of State James M. Tucker announces Gov M Townsend appointed Joseph Hoffman of Indianapolis as state securities commissioner. Hoffman, a Democrat, will serve under Tucker, a Republican, succeeding Chester W Montgomery of South Bend. Tucker had also recommended James M Givens of Porter for the post, but the governor refused.
Joyce Ruth Stone, one year old daughter of Mr and Mrs Clear Stone of Dugger rural route, died at 7:00 am in Mary Sherman hospital Sullivan after a two week illness. Survived by parents and one brother Jerry Ray Stone three weeks old. Rites at Morris Chapel church at 10:00 am Thursday with burial in Morris Chapel cemetery.
Paris reports indicate Britain will drop the far eastern guarantee in peace front talks with Soviet Russia. Viscount Halifax and Ivan Maisky reportedly agreed to omit the guarantee to lure Japan from the Rome Berlin axis. Tokyo reportedly rejected German naval cooperation proposals as of now.
David Tuttle 63, longtime resident southeast of Linton, died at 10:50 p.m. after an 11 year illness. Born January 11, 1876 in Carmel county Tennessee, he is survived by his widow Eliza and nine siblings. Funeral services set for 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at the family residence with burial in Pleasant Grove cemetery. Pleasantville in charge.
Frank Sandy Taylor a former Worthington druggist is in critical condition at his Indianapolis home after a Monday morning crash. He fell asleep while driving back from a fishing trip three blocks from his residence as his car hit a concrete abutment and was demolished. He received medical care but remains unconscious.
