Nicholas Keller of West Linton was arrested yesterday by Greene County Sheriff Bert Caldwell after an altercation with his wife. He was taken to the county jail in Bloomfield and charged with public intoxication.
Funeral services for Herman Ring 34 of Lyons are set for Thursday at the Lyons Methodist church with Rev. Russell Taylor. Ring died while working on piling over the White River near Elliston, drowning at about 11:55 AM. His body was recovered after a six hour search by local men using boats nets and grappling hooks. Ring, a Greene county resident and Lyons High School graduate, is survived by his widow Mary Deney Ring mother Mrs. William Stewart and brother Walter. Davidson and Son Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
Steven Newton Hanna 68 lifelong Vicksburg resident died at 1:50 am at his cousin Mrs Ruth Zeners home after a yearlong illness. Born Oct 17 1870 near Vicksburg he was a farmer in later life. Survived by cousins Mrs Zener Mrs Raymond Brown Mrs Gale Bunner and Mrs Douglas Hudson. Funeral at Vicksburg Baptist Church Friday at 2 pm with Rev George Adams and burial in Fairview cemetery.
Fire of undetermined origin damaged the seventy five year old Opera House building and eight first floor shops in New Albany Indiana. Loss was estimated at 385000. Flames started in the basement but smoke hid the third floor as firefighters fought the blaze. Water intrusion caused most damage. The property belonged to heirs of August Barth and had not been used as a theater since 1912. It was damaged by the 1938 Ohio river flood.
Memel Germany March 29 Nazi authorities move to enforce anti Jewish laws in Memel less than a week after it rejoined the Reich. The general code remains inactive until May 1 but existing laws conflicting with Nuremberg measures have been repealed. Aryanization of Jewish businesses accelerates with liquidations timed to avoid abrupt economic disruption.
Eastern soft coal operators at the Appalachian joint wage hour conference favor renewing the two year contract covering 538000 bituminous miners with no wage change. Northern operators back renewal while some southern groups push for a cut possibly threatening withdrawal. A four member sub committee will continue negotiations.
Reports from Bucharest on March 29 describe serious separatist incidents in Cluj and nearby Transylvanian towns where Hungarian minorities form large shares of the population. Tensions threaten international complications as Romania notes continued military precautions and Hungary calls up new classes to the colors.

About 29 barbers from Linton area attended the annual Boss and Journeyman banquet at the Frank Court ney American Legion post. W C Birthright of Indianapolis gave the main address. Attendees included barbers and guests from Jasonville Bloomfield Pleasantville and other towns. regrets came from several neighboring shops. The Women’s Auxiliary of the Linton Legion post prepared the banquet.
Mr and Mrs G W Johnson relocate from their farm west of the city to 63 Second Street Southwest to establish their new home.
County assessors and township trustees will visit homes over six weeks to enforce dog license payments. Fines include court costs and a $5 additional fee if bailed into court. Fees remain $1 for male and spayed dogs, $3 for females, $5 for each extra dog, with assessments ending May 15.
Major General Julian L. Schley ordered detailed surveys of proposed navigation and flood control works in Washington. One survey focuses on the Wabash river at Terre Haute with plans for channel changes and levee protection.
The House completed action on a modified bill granting the President power to shift and realign executive agencies. The measure, after two years of debate, now goes to President Roosevelt for signature and would let him issue reorganization orders unless both houses disapprove within sixty days.

The House Appropriations Committee reports an additional 100 million relief bill to fund WPA through June 30, 1940, 50 million less than Roosevelt asked. Economies in WPA administration and unspent relief funds on hand by Jan 31 enable the plan. The panel also proposes 0.552 million for the Labor Department with 25 thousand for 15 more labor conciliators to prevent strikes.
The Federal Rural Electrification Administration allocates 5,000 dollars to Utilities District of Western Indiana REMC Bloomfield to pre loan for wiring and plumbing installations. Notes cannot exceed 80 percent of costs and must be repaid within five years with at least two payments yearly. REA suggests 6 percent interest on unpaid balance while cooperative covers about 3 percent for funds.
Nationalists captured Valencia, Spain's third largest city, a day after Madrid fell. Automobiles carrying fascist members arrived in the Plaza Castle at 1 p.m., flags appeared, and crowds gave the fascist salute as Republican leaders fled toward Alicante or Gandia.
Linton Oilers came from 18-15 down at halftime to beat the Danville College All Stars 52-24 in a local gym independent matchup. Earl Leavitt of Lyons led with 24 points, sinking 12 of 14 field goals as the Oilers pulled away in the second half amid strong turnout.
Funeral services for Flora May Sullivan 66 a Plummer community resident east of Lyons will be held at 10:30 Thursday morning at Prairie Chapel church. The burial will follow in Prairie Chapel cemetery. She died Tuesday after a stroke. She was born December 23, 1871. Survived by a sister Hettie Terrell and half-brother Dan Sullivan. five siblings preceded her in death.
Brazil Ind March 29 Thomas W Swinehart clerk of the Clay circuit court declined to help in a courting by mail affair. A man from another state asked if a Clay county woman would suit for marriage. They had met through a correspondence club. We sell the licenses but dont furnish the brides.
Funeral services for Mrs. Ellen Long 81 died Monday at her daughter Mrs Nettie Harbaughs home in Clay City were conducted at Beech church with burial in the adjoining cemetery. Survived by husband Gabriel a daughter three sons Porter Harrison and William twenty one grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
The Ministry of Transport annual return reports that Britain now has more than five million mechanically propelled vehicles, with a total of 3,093,883 in the current count.
Britain's government announced a wartime expansion of the territorial army to 240000 men. Prime Minister Chamberlain said voluntary enlistment would nearly triple the force, doubling divisions available for overseas service in France.
Reports circulate on Tuesday of possible start of oil tests in Widner township with leases recorded by oil firms between here and Westphalia and north of Bicknell. Drilling of two test wells in Vigo township near Sandborn is forecast along with renewed leases by Worthington Petroleum Co. and several individual lessors in Vigo and Widner townships.
Police broadcast a missing persons alert for Margery Mix a 16 year old girl from East Ridge Street and Fern Knowles a 7 year old girl from South Alabama Street both from Brazil Indiana. The pair disappeared after leaving for Sunday school around 9 am. Authorities believe they may have traveled to Harrisburg or Union Mills Indiana.
Mr. and Mrs. Frear Frye and family of Pleasantville were dinner guests Sunday of Mr. and Mrs. T. C. Singleton of Washington. Mrs. Anna F. Shields accompanied them home after spending the past two weeks in Washington as the guest of the Singletons.
