County assessors begin work after instruction by County Assessor Joe M. Goodman in Bloomfield. Assessors have until May 15 to finish. Dog tax tags totaling 44 800 are issued at 1 for male dogs and unspayed females 3 for unspayed females. extra tag 6. Kennel licenses 25 for major and 15 for minor. Dogs under three months exempt. dogs found without tags after June 1 may be killed. Tax proceeds fund damages for livestock.
D V Elembaugh 77 lifelong resident of the community died at 5 10 this morning at his home in West Linton from influenza complications. He is survived by widow Annis and five children, two stepchildren, six grandchildren. Funeral at Antioch church Saturday 1 PM with burial in Antioch cemetery. Newkirk funeral home in charge. Body to be returned to family residence tomorrow.
University of Oregon psychology professor Dr. Lester F. Beck claims the Dionne quintuplets would not have survived if born male and asserts women are stronger than men. He warns against gendered assumptions in infant survival.
In Linton gym the Welders toppled Columbus 39 to 18 in a post season affair. Holder led with 13 points, Woolsey 11, Hamner 9, as the Welders built a 21 10 halftime lead and held Columbus to eight in the second half. Money from the game funds honor sweaters for the Welder quintet. crowd was the season’s largest.
Kenneth Calvert 40 of Switz City rural route died about five this morning from heart disease. Found in bed by his wife, he had been in failing health four years and treated for rheumatism in Evansville for three years. Greene county coroner Dr. Sam Rotman ruled heart disease. Survived by wife and four children. Body sent to Davidson and Son funeral home in Lyons awaiting arrangements.
Hospital report lists Miss Ida Slinkard Terre Haute admitted for treatment. Mrs. Frank Brunett Owensboro underwent major operation Wednesday night. Mrs. Harry Walton 360 D Street Northwest submitted to a major operation this morning.
The Rural Electrification Administration telegram confirms official approval of the second Indiana Greene unit construction contract. Miller Baxter Company of Indianapolis will move in to start field work soon, with service to Greene Clay Daviess and Martin counties expected as members line up for wiring.
Henry Krueger, 51, sought for a year on Illinois securities charges, was captured by DuPage County investigator Alan Myers in Colorado after a five mile pursuit on a mountain road. Krueger allegedly sold $75,000 of worthless Doris Ruby gold mine stock in Du Page county and faced a $5,000 bond after arraignment in January 1958. He was attempting to reopen an abandoned mine near Buena Vista when apprehended.
Indiana's S H A A tournament starts in 64 sectional centers tonight with Greene county focusing on Bloomfield where 12 county teams compete for the county title and a regional bid. Lyons meets Jasonville at 7 pm in a near even matchup while Linton faces Owensburg and Switz City plays Scotland at 9 pm with strong expectations for large crowds and exciting games.
Indiana Governor Townsend signed the Markland liquor control bill effective immediately. The law closes taverns at midnight on weekdays and 1 am Saturdays, ends the beer importer system, removes wholesaler limits, and preserves the existing alcoholic beverages commission. The House defeated a bipartisan probe plan, voting 50 to 47 along party lines.
Former U S circuit judge Martin T Manton and insurance man George M Specto were indicted by a federal grand jury for conspiracy to defraud the U S government. The three conspiracy counts and one substantive count stem from investigations into the federal judiciary.
Linton City firefighters responded to a roof fire at Chester Shank’s home on 360 H street northeast at 2 pm. They quickly brought the flames under control with minimal damage reported.
Officials urge a large attendance at the March banquet of the Greater Linton club to be held at 6 20 tonight at First Christian church. A surprise speaker will be announced at the event along with a report on the Linton Community Chest activities. Local entertainers and the Recreation orchestra under Bert Brown will perform during supper prepared by church ladies.
The first of a series of first aid classes for miners and others will begin Friday at 6 50 p m in the Linton Public Library. Supervising instructors are Robert Davidson and Walter Lawson.
Eugenio Pacelli chosen as the 262nd pope on his 43rd birthday. The election followed 62 cardinals voting in St. Peter's, smoke signaling success as cheers rose from the crowd. Pacelli, secretary of state under Pius XI, guided Lateran accords and strong Vatican-Italy relations.
Olympic distance runner Don Lash of the Indiana State Police spoke at four Linton gatherings about safety and his running career. He urged motorists’ trust in highway police, recalled Berlin 1936 stories, and discussed plans for the 1940 Helsinki Olympics in Finland.
Chaz Jones alias Wayne Kelly, 23, of Ventura California, was sentenced by Judge William J. Folten to one to twenty years in Joliet penitentiary for stealing an automobile in De Kalb. He was arrested within five minutes, indicted Monday, and sent to the penitentiary Wednesday.
