The Greene Sullivan area sees a warm humid spell with daily chances of showers and thundershowers. Tonight lows near 70, Tuesday highs in the upper 80s, with similar warmth and unsettled conditions Wednesday through Friday.
The Greene County Commissioners will hold a public meeting on Tuesday July 5 at 10 a.m. in the courthouse commissioners room in Bloomfield. Citizens may suggest uses for Federal Revenue Sharing Funds and all interested persons are invited to attend.
An eight year old Indianapolis boy was killed over the weekend when a shotgun given two years ago as a Father’s Day present discharged while a 17 year old held it. The teen, Loyd, said he had used the gun twice since June 1975 and doubted he would fire it again. Henry Loyd was showing the weapon to Albert Couch and siblings when one of three remaining skeet shells fired.
The Carter White House moves to speed tougher fuel economy rules despite auto industry protests. Transportation Secretary Brock Adams says 27.5 mpg by 1985 may be too conservative. A Maury County jail blaze killed 42 people and injured 33 after a padded cell foam fire spread through the facility during visiting hours. Authorities suspect a 16 year old fugitive started the fire. deputies and firefighters pulled trapped victims from smoke filled corridors as coffins, autopsies, and toxic gas analyses were ordered.
Two Linton residents Marvin and Ida Mae Smith died in a Sunday crash near Elnora while Vincennes youth Charles Montgomery, 16, was killed Saturday afternoon on Highway 67 near Marco. Montgomery’s car collided head on with a semi truck driven by Jerry Brown. The Smiths died in a separate collision on Highway 57 in Elnora. The incidents raise Greene County 1977 highway fatalities. Montgomery had played tennis at Humphreys Park earlier that day. The bodies were sent to Brockman Funeral Home. services planned for Wednesday.
Indianapolis pastor Paul F. Wilson was barred from entering Manila to join the Conference on Law of the World Aug. 21 26. The Philippine immigration commissioner cited derogatory information about him, despite church claims of his prior humanitarian work and waived visa assurances for participants.
The SIHSA board reaffirmed September elections for new Subarea Advisory Council members by a 10 to 8 vote. Some members urged cancellation, citing time concerns and democratic questions, while others warned against delaying public involvement in health planning.
