A July safety column cites National Safety Council data on July accidents, heat, drownings, falls, and fireworks. It uses Lou Gehrig’s illness as a warning to seek regular physical checkups and address early warning signs before serious damage occurs.
A covered dish dinner will be served at 11 30 oclock Wednesday morning in the Red Men's hall by the local Royal Neighbors lodge. All local members were urged to attend this meeting.
Judge J Raymond Powell denied Pearl Miller a writ of habeas corpus but granted Yancey Zachery bail set at 5000 dollars with return date September 5 1939. Zachery may be released while Miller remains jailed. Trial not expected before September. prosecution indicated no opposition to Zachery bail amid courtroom tensions and witness tampering accusations.
Dale Sims, 190 F street northwest, is hospitalized in Bedford City Hospital after a late Saturday night crash on State Highway 58 east of Bedford. He suffered a compound fracture of the left femur, underwent surgery Monday, and was reported progressing satisfactorily. The injured man is the son of Mr and Mrs Harley Sims of the city.
Virginia Hull daughter of Dr and Mrs King L Hull of Bloomfield underwent a minor operation this morning. Doris Auberry of Bloomfield rural route admitted for treatment. Clarence McCombs of Lyons submitted to a minor operation this morning. Wayne Nicholson of Jasonville rural route underwent a major operation this morning. Mrs Wayne J Pope and baby of Linton route 3 were taken to their home this morning. Effie Keller of Lyons route 1 was taken to her home Monday afternoon.
Lt Gen Masanaru Homma said sentries at the blockaded British concession entrances need not strip searched. Japan also closed Foochow and Wenchow ports and warned ships away as British and French officers here judged their forces could deter a prolonged Japanese sea and air assault on South Asian holdings.
Rep. Sol Bloom said about fifty Republicans would join with most Democrats to pass his revised neutrality bill as the House opened the measure. Leaders discussed possible night sessions and three-day recesses while the Senate debated the bill. In Louisiana Gov Earl K Long vowed a purge, targeting Dr James Monroe Smith, fugitive former LSU president charged with embezzling $100,000.
An American built warplane will fly solo from San Diego to Felixstowe England next month to join a European air force. The aircraft, a large seaplane style airboat, was built for the British Royal Air Force at Consolidated’s San Diego plant, modeled after U S Navy patrol bombers.
Three marriage licenses were issued in Greene County during June by Clerk Claude Story. Recipients include Robert Lee Hamilton of Bloomfield and Marybelle English of Bloomfield, Frank Minella of Linton and Ruby Minella of Linton, and Wilbur Wathen of Jasonville with Nora Dyer of Worthington.
Linton official delegates from Linton Indiana, including Dr. E. V. Bull and Alf M. Beasley, attended last week's Townsend old age pension plan convention in Indianapolis. Congressman Gerald W. Lancis spoke at 3:00 PM Saturday during sessions.
Plans for the annual Miners' picnic sponsored by District No. 11 U M W A locals are underway. The event will be at Stadium grounds along Highway 40 on August 11 12 and 15 with a large attendance anticipated.
Local officials forecast a record hot day with the thermometer near 97 degrees by afternoon after reaching 96 at 2 10 pm and 94 earlier at 4 pm. Forecasters warned thundershowers might occur later in the day.
William A Sherrill 77 of South Linton dies Money afternoon. Funeral services set for 2 p m Wednesday at the family residence with Deaconess Nola D Yoder in charge. Burial in Switz City cemetery.
Members of the Sherwood Safety chapter will meet at 7:00 PM Thursday in the basement of the Saron Reformed church here. Mr. Moss of the National Youth Administration will present a motion picture on the History of Baseball featuring numerous big league stars. All members are urged to attend.
A roof fire caused by a defective flue at 7:45 this morning threatened George Scecina's home at 260 G Street Southwest. City firefighters quickly brought the flames under control with damage estimated at about 25 dollars.
United Press reports Pan American Airways will begin a 22 hour passenger service across the Atlantic tomorrow. The Dixie Clipper with 16 men and four women will depart Port Washington at 1 pm CST for the first regular US Europe flight of its kind, a historic pace compared with Christopher Columbus.
The Greater Linton club announces a grand new Fourth of July with a mile long parade starting at 10:00 AM and a fresh fireworks display at 7:30 PM. Volunteers can join by contacting secretary Steve Stalcup and floats are built at the Letterman building on North Main Street.
Washington dispatch reports the AFL accuses CIO leader John L. Lewis of dictatorship and refusal to bargain, signaling pressure from President Roosevelt amid labor tensions. In Indianapolis, Ruth Joiner, a Crawfordsville welfare worker, was rescued after a gunbattle when prisoners seized her at Michigan City state prison and held her as a hostage.
The Linton Miners beat the Dugger Jerichos 9 to 4 last Sunday and will host the Spencer Merchants at Humphreys Park next Sunday. Pitcher Trinkle Miney held the Jerichos to six hits while the Miners slugged 13 hits. Practice for the Miners is scheduled for 4:00 pm Wednesday and Friday as they prepare for the undefeated Spencer club.
Bob Wade son of Mr and Mrs Harry Wade spends a week at Bethany park for training in Young People's Conference work He is accompanied by Rev B H Bruner who also stays for the week.
Bloomfield Pepsi-Cola baseball team defeated the league-leading Linton Merchants 10-4 at Worthington to seize and hold first place in the Greene County kitty-ball loop. Linton led 4-3 in the seventh before Bloomfield rallied with seven runs aided by walks and timely hits. Linton moves five and one, Bloomfield five and zero, next action planned for Wednesday night.
Bloominton June 27 Little Ivis Charlotte Lake one year old daughter of Mr and Mrs Elmer Lake is recovering from carbolic acid burns after reaching a bottle in a kitchen cabinet. The child took some acid into her mouth and spilled it on her face and legs but a Bloomington physician treated her promptly and the injuries are believed to be confined to burns around the mouth face and legs with no swallowed poison.
After five years of moonlit streets, the town council signed a contract to reinstall 20 electric street lamps replacing the moon as lighting. The move ends a long debate over consistent illumination and improves nighttime visibility for residents and visitors.
Waning interest in Knox county oil exploration revived by a showing at the T. S. Toyce well on the Oliver Williams farm three miles southwest of Wheatland. At 1781 feet oil rose 150 feet with several balers brought to surface. Driller suspended operations awaiting casing to control water intrusion and prepare for deeper drilling.
