A column item about a station on the I I S Railroad near Sullivan referenced a Scotch storyteller named Irvine. A reader called to say the station’s namesake was related to Mrs Mary Collins of 440 Second Street Northwest, but the surname was Irvine, not Irving.
A fourth flood crest devastates the Snaky Valley, threatening nearly 300000 acres of farmland across Missouri Kansas and Nebraska. The Missouri River flood pushes toward St Joseph and Parkville with levee risk while 200 million dollars in crops and property face ruin. 20000 people displaced.
Mrs Evelyn Axe of Indianapolis underwent major surgery today. Mrs Susie Squires of Dugger gave birth to a daughter today, not yet named. Miss Mary Etta Haffley of Linton had an appendectomy. Miss Tillie Ann Shearn of Linton was taken home yesterday. Charles Yoynt of Switz City discharged Monday. Lois Elaine Lind of Linton taken home yesterday. John Stropes of Linton discharged Monday. Mrs Lona Slaven of Odon taken home today.
The Linton Lions Club offers three prizes for the best dressed bicycle in the local Community Fourth of July parade. First prize is 5 dollars, second 3 dollars, and third 1 dollar. Entries must register with Doc Elson at Elson Jewelry.
A meeting of the Linton Junior Chamber of Commerce will be held at 8 o clock tonight at the local public library. The announcement urged all members to attend.
About 7 000 miners in 17 Indiana coal mines striked to protest the Taft Hartley bill. Lt Cmdr C E Poe of the Coal Mines Administration reported 11 shafts and six mines idle across Indiana with production cut to about 7 700 tons daily. Major mine sites affected included Black Hawk Victory Snow Hill Dressier Saxton in Terre Haute area and Gilndora Sullivan Kings Station and Ingle in other towns.
Father Bernard Hubbard alleged a Soviet atomic plant near Moscow suffered a catastrophic blast a year ago due to lack of know how. He claimed several scientists were killed in the explosion and cited an authoritative source. He did not name the source.
Mr and Mrs Roy E Lacey attended the funeral of Algon Sarver at the Cincinnati church Saturday afternoon. They were joined by Mrs Clayton Rodecker of Switz City, Mrs Hattie Miller and daughter Golda, and Mrs Fannie Hedrick of Bloomfield. Dr and Mrs Alec McPhail hosted weekend guests Thelma Pierce and children of Indianapolis along with Wayne Perkins and son Rodney of Evansville staying for a few days.
Indiana faces a potential natural gas shortage next winter worse than last heating season though efforts are under way to avert it. Demand growth and limited pipeline capacity could trigger rationing with priority given to domestic heating and large users losing interruptible gas. Industry spokesmen note Indiana now uses nearly twice prewar domestic consumption.

Police seek stronger evidence as Lobaugh re confesses and repudiates under scrutiny by a lie detector test. James Nicholas Lobaughs attorney says he will not appear before the grand jury as planned.
A boxcar loaded with sodium hydrosulphite caught fire on a Milwaukee Railroad freight siding. Early reports claimed deadly fumes, but a Commercial Solvents Corp chemist said fumes would cause at most mild coughing. Firefighters faced fears of explosion but moved the burning car away from homes. chemists noted water would not trigger an explosion and fumes resembled sulfur dioxide.
Louis Zdzowski is in the provincial penitentiary for five years after taking $4,800 from George Feniak by selling painted metal pieces as gold using an old trick.
President Truman summoned the National Labor Relations Board for a White House conference to discuss enforcing the Taft Hartley labor act which he says is unworkable. Labor groups launched wildcat strikes across seven states with about 135,000 miners out. Congress overrode his veto 68 to 25 in the Senate and 331 to 83 in the House.
Oliver Terpening Jr., 16, confessed to killing four playmates near Goodland farm on May 26 to feel a thrill. He was sentenced to life imprisonment at Jackson state prison after psychiatrists deemed him sane. Victims include Barbara Smith 16 and Stanley Smith 14 plus Gladys 12 and Janet 2.
Jerry Lechien five years old son of Mr and Mrs Emile Lechien of Linton was taken to Riley hospital Indianapolis Monday evening for treatment for spinal meningitis. It is the first case of the disease reported in this part of the state this year.
Acting City Collector William P. Geis reports a decline in horse licenses in early 1947 with only 546 licenses for one horse vehicles issued in five months versus 717 the prior year. Only one two horse license has been issued this year, eight for two horses by June 1, 1946.

Plans for the Lin ton Fourth of July carnival moved ahead with a public rest tent for visitors at the carnival grounds in High School park. Boy Scout first aid workers will be on duty all day. The tent serves as a headquarters for park activities and is funded by local businesses and organizations.
Three Johns Hopkins researchers Drs. Isabel M. Morgan Howard A. Howe and David Bodian report successful vaccination of monkeys against infantile paralysis using live polio virus. They caution the vaccine is too dangerous for humans. The work appears in the American Journal of Hygiene and the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis plans a five year, 425000 dollar grant for continued polio research.
In Chicago on June 24, July delivery corn prices topped $2 a bushel for the first time, hitting $2.01%4, the second record in two weeks. The prior peak was $2.00% reached last Thursday as floods in the corn belt reduced crop prospects.
