Bill Murray recalls a bygone Fourth while inviting readers to a big parade in Linton at 10:00 a.m. next Tuesday. The piece blends local history with a call to enjoy the day, the band, and fireworks amid a nostalgic reflection on past harvest-time celebrations.
The Townsend clubs at Cable Tabernacle held a fourth annual meeting in Indianapolis with 12,000 attendees. A starting fund of 3525.51 was raised for a $1,000,000 advertising campaign as Sen. Gerald Nye urged enacting the Townsend plan into law and warned against expanding presidential power. Rep. Gerald Landis urged adoption to replace WPA and other agencies.
George Hall a 50 year old Detroit oil promoter was found shot on a rural road near Lainsburg Shiawassee county hours after a hitchhiker was first described by Hall s companion Miss Ruby Colby 32 of Pineconning She led police to the body and described the abduction and robbery in which Hall was killed and robbed of 10 dollars his wrist watch a ring and three dollars from Colby
William Marshall a 15 year old Jasonville boy was sentenced to the Indiana Boys school until age 21 by Judge J Raymond Powell after his Terre Haute arrest with three other youths on concealed weapons and vagrancy charges. The group allegedly planned a Collett park concession stand hold up.
Linton reports a new picnic area in the woods south of the Municipal golf course club house. Tables ovens and drinking water are provided and numerous picnic parties visit daily. The shaded site is recommended for daytime outings and open to the public.
The Daily Citizen reports an error correcting the appointments. Clarence Hatcher is the new manager of the Linton Ax and Fry store and Harry Young is the new manager of the Jasonville store.
Hospital report lists Frank Terrell of Bloomfield route 4, Mrs Effie Keller of Lyons route, Mrs Lowell Mitchell and baby, and Mrs Bertha Cullison of Switz City all admitted for treatment.
Greene County Women’s Republican club will elect officers Tuesday evening at the Lyons High School gymnasium Lyons. The June meeting begins at 6 30 pm with a covered dish supper followed by entertainment and speeches. George Craig of Brazil former Clay county Republican chairman will give the principal address. All members and friends are invited.
Paul E. Gee 21 formerly of Greene county was arrested in Evansville on a warrant for issuing a fraudulent check. The $310 check written on Sandborn Bank was given to a local merchant. Gee was brought to Linton jail by Stockton Township Constable Joe Taylor and an Evansville officer.
State WPA headquarters announced eleven proposals for Indiana funding. Sullivan County would spend 1,341,343 on county road improvements and Bedford would lead in street work at 1,424,684. Lyons Washington township school renovation is planned for 3,099 to clean and renovate the school.
Joe Zysko a 50 year old American No 1 miner is in serious condition at Good Samaritan hospital Bicknell Ind with a fractured back a fractured left leg and a lacerated right arm from a slate fall while removing timbers to lay mine track He received first aid from the mine physician before transportation to the hospital.
New Indiana General Assembly acts impose penalties for following a fire truck within 500 feet and for parking within a block of the scene. The law targets non officials with business at a fire and carries heavy penalties for violations.
President Franklin D. Roosevelt arrived at Hyde Park, New York for a five day rest. He deplaned from a special train at Highland at 5 53 a m and drove across the mid Hudson bridge toward his home. The day also marked Pan American’s Yankee Clipper starting regular airmail service between the United States and England from Port Washington with a 7 28 a m takeoff.
Col. Benik Benes aged 44, named military attaché of the Czechoslovak legation before Germany seized Czechoslovakia, leaped to death from a platform of the Eiffel Tower during an evening banquet marking the 50th anniversary of the shower of the Duchess of Windsor as officials and social leaders dined nearby.
State police and Vigo County deputies raided the Trianon dance hall arresting eleven men on gambling charges. Edward Freije 42 faced a charge of owning keno equipment. About seventy five patrons were identified. $333 in cash seized. The operation followed a Protestant ministerial association demand to curb gambling.
French dispatches describe large scale German troop concentrations from Trier to Saarbruck and intensified fortifications in the Jura mountain border area near the confluence of France Germany and Switzerland. The movements precede summer maneuvers and focus on the northeast frontier near Bitche and Wissembourg.
Senate leaders rejected a six month extension of the present silver price and vowed to block any must monetary legislation until a higher price is obtained. Majority Leader Barkley announced the appeasement effort after Roosevelt conferred with advisers on the new lending program amid a Western filibuster.
Mrs. Harry Welch returned to Linton Friday after a ten day visit in Greencastle with her sister Mrs. Charles Rutter and brothers Oscar and Artie O'Hare. Mr. Welch accompanied her home after going to Greencastle Thursday.
About noon today 40 year old Robert Woodruff suffered severe burns when 75 pounds of blasting powder on a powder car ignited at the Linton-Summit coal company New Hope mine six miles northwest of Linton. He was treated locally and is expected to recover. another cave in earlier this month also caused injuries.
Hymera high school basketball coach Lloyd Sanders will be the principal speaker at 6 50 Sunday evening for the Christian Youth Advocates meeting at First Baptist church. He will discuss Great Men and Women and Virginia Wilson of Linton will lead the devotional portion. Roy O Haver will preside. special musical numbers are planned. all area youths are invited.
Army air corps experts joined 200 glider pilots and thousands of spectators at the 20th national sharing contests in Emira New York. Lieut. Col. Howard C. Davidson observed flights to explore motorless flight for training and cost casualty reductions. Capt. C. F. Mc Bain and Eastman Jacobs with Dr. R. C. Platt assisted.
In Tientsin on June 24 the A P reports Japan lifted the embargo on ships including British and American vessels at Swatow effective today. Foreigners awaited arrivals of food mail and passengers while British authorities asked for a warship protection. Minor clashes continued withBritish sailors involved in scuffles and a Briton humiliated in Tientsin as anti British parades swept China.
In Green County Court today Fern Cook Maude Bullock and Eva Yoho filed suit against the Wabash and Erie canal trustees and about 275 other defendants to quiet title to 385.76 acres in Beech Creek and Center townships. Nellie Helms was granted a divorce from Marshall Helms with custody of a minor child. The Hancock case Grace Iva Hancock had her cross-claim dismissed and the case was dismissed.
A county man sustained a crushed ankle when a tree fell on him while driving a log hauling wagon on the Bucher farm in Taylor township. He was transported to Free man-Greene County hospital and then to Linton for treatment. The injured man, Terrell, works for William P. Wampler of Bloomington. Doctors awaited X ray results, with prognosis not yet clear.
