Local groups from choirs to ladies aid and clubs held or planned meetings this week. Events include Baptist and Pythian gatherings, Moose and Elks activities, a bridge session, and a park outing with lunch at Shakamak.
Opening statements Tuesday in Vincennes outlined the state's case against Ward Davis of Petersburg for the Annav France murder in 1954. Samuel Dillon described Davis borrowing a revolver and car, driving with France’s body, and telling friends he was in trouble while asserting he killed her. Large crowds attended the trial as testimonies began.
Friday events include Friday apaw Tribe No 143 Improved Red Men at the Waneta club hall meeting at Edith Johnson's Seventh Avenue home. Glenburn graduates are to be earned by the Mothers Circle at 1 30 p m. The G M G of the Saron Reed church holds a monthly gathering at Anita art's home at 7 50 p m. J T M members meet at 6 p m for a short special meet. Pirates Missionary Guild of Saron Reformed church with Anita Stewart at p m.
The Kings Heralds of the First Church meet at the hall at 8 p.m. at 210 North Main Street. Patty Ner invites attendees to bring a thank offering.
The Lyke 4-H club held a meeting at the high school under Rogers leadership. Lela Rose presented a poem and Roach and MarjorieMailer sang. KaJean Love from Worthington performed a tap dance. Attendees planned a hike to Weld. The meeting opened with songs and the club pledge.
Mr and Mrs Roy Williams announce the birth of a daughter weighing 8 pounds 1.5 ounces born Wednesday. Visitors will not be received for a few days. The baby has been named Linda Jane.
Treasury officials told the joint congressional tax committee that Andrew Mellon Alfred Sloan Jr and other wealthy Americans formed personal holding companies to reduce income taxes. Internal Revenue Commissioner Guy Helvering said the methods were illegal and urged remedial legislation. He named Thomas Lamont John Raskob and members of the DuPont and Fisher families among those who used the devices.
A violent wind and rain storm swept northeastern Indiana causing at least 25000 in damage. In Hove Lima township gymnasium roof and wall were destroyed. Communications with Ontario and other towns in LaGrange County were knocked out while crops and frame buildings suffered heavy damage.

County Agricultural Agent reports new conservation rules from Indiana Agriculture Conservation committee. Oats and wheat cut for hay must meet maturity and green appearance standards. soybeans and cowpeas hay must show uniform green color and seed not beyond half grown. Proof of compliance required. applies to neutral crops not seedings.
London reports that Britain and France warned Germany that any belligerent move against Loyalist Spain would be treated with gravity. The alert, sent via Sir Neville Henderson, follows Neurath’s claim that withdrawal from neutrality patrols makes the warning unnecessary.
The National Revenue Department reports April income tax collections across Canada totaled 36 million dollars, up 9.5 million from April 1936, indicating higher earnings than at any time since 1929.
Mr and Mrs Thad Wolford take Mrs Leon De Camp to Indianapolis on the way to Michigan. They will visit their daughter Miss Mary Jane Wolford studying nurses training there.
Albert Moore, 37, of Carlisle, was found guilty in Sullivan county circuit court of malicious mayhem and sentenced to two to four teen years in the state penitentiary. Three co defendants from Carlisle face similar charges. Moore seeks a new trial. A separate note reports a Center of Population stone from Linton Indiana will join Battle Creek Michigan for a Boy Scout jack knife tomb dedication on Sept 17 with a knife vault and intricate ceremonial features.
Indianapolis June 24. R W Bunch director of the bureau of personnel reports the Indiana merit plan raises standards in public office. Of 174 state welfare department employees 111 are high school graduates who attended college. 48 percent are college graduates and 18 hold postgraduate degrees. The children's bureau hires mostly trained social workers.
The Senate approved by 35 to 31 a proposal to raise surtaxes starting at $6 000 annual incomes. Senator Robert La Follette Jr sponsored an amendment to broaden the income tax base by lowering exemptions and boosting the overall surtax structure.
Harrisburg June 24 Governor George H Earle ordered modified martial law in Johnstown discontinued at 6 am tomorrow (C S T). He said the emergency has passed and that the choice was lives over dollars, declaring the end to martial law at the stated time.
Greene county farmers predict the largest wheat crop in years as combines replace binders and fields ripen fully. Chin ch bug broods are found in two areas but not yet dangerous, with log drag and creosote methods advised for control and limited supplies available.

Funeral services were conducted at Furnace Christian church for Hugh Alexander who died Tuesday at home after a long illness. Interment followed at Walnut Grove cemetery. The 85 year old resident of Furnace, east of Bloomfield, was born November 15 1851 in Ohio to Anthony and Mary Flaherty Alexander. Surviving are sons John Alexander of Dugger Tom Alexander of California and Anthony Jack Alexander and daughter Mary Fitzpatrick. His wife Mary Alexander preceded him in death five years earlier.
In Norwood Massachusetts Fred J Shaier longtime chauffeur for Mrs Mary E Morrill for 31 years has saved plate 354 and 355 from the two cars he drove. He also preserves a complete set of registration plates from every state in the Union.

Philip Murray offers Roosevelt as final arbitrator amid talks with Taft mediation panel on the steel strike involving about 80,000 workers. In Warren Ohio, industrial leaders end a walkout but lockouts persist, with guards and militia at Republic Steel mills and several plants checking workers returning to duty.
A large crowd from Linton and surrounding communities is expected tonight for the 1937 concert at 8 o clock from the City park bandstand. Howard Lynn directs a varied program as the band recently prepared new numbers after spring and winter practice sessions.
