David G. March of Lafayette, former New Ross high school basketball coach, was chosen as Bloomfield's new mentor by the school board. He will replace Arthur M. Gross who resigned recently. March coached at New Roy and Louisburg Junior College and holds a Purdue 4 B degree (1933) and a 1938 physical education master's. He was Purdue assistant freshman football coach under Noble Kizer. His selection came from 48 applicants in Greene County.
Harold C. Preble, civilian survivor of the Squalus disaster, urged a naval court to retrofit submarines with quick closing inboard induction valves and remote control. He said hull and engine valves were not adequate in emergencies and called for improved valve design across the fleet.
Dorothy Cheney 32 a Dugger native and nurse died en route to the delivery room at Methodist hospital Indianapolis. Her baby girl, born minutes later, was reported progressing favorably. Surviving: husband Dr Frederick D Cheney Indianapolis, a son Frederick 2, mother Mrs Bishop, four sisters and a brother. Funeral at Moore and Kirk mortuary Crown Hill burial.
Indiana's new traffic code sets speed limits on state highways with over 30 mph in residential zones and over 20 mph in business districts. The state highway commission must designate limited zones statewide and has already zoned about 300 cities and towns with official black-on-white signs being erected.
Indianapolis June 22 state police chief Donald F Stiver said arrests would be made today for truck drivers lacking weight tax licenses. The law requires visible tire size and classification on each vehicle and imposes fines of 10 to 100 dollars per day for violations. In Linton Tuesday night 65 Greene County truckers formed the Greene County Truckers association and moved to file an injunction to halt enforcement of the weight law.
A Greene Circuit Court hearing is set for Monday in Bloomfield to consider habeas corpus petitions for Mrs. Pearl Miller and Yancey Zachery. They allege weak evidence and seek release on bond until their trial, likely at the September term. Miller’s petition was filed by Norvalk K. Harris. Zachery’s by James E. Babcock. Both are indicted for the 1933 murder of Mrs. Mary Ellis near Jasonville.
Mrs Cletha Leeveq reports Jules Borelly Jr daughter of hers underwent an appendectomy at Methodist hospital in Indianapolis Tuesday night. Mr Borelly was discharged from the same hospital last week. Mrs Leeoey and Mrs Jules Borelly Sr left this morning to be with them.
Mrs J Albert Jackson of Bloomfield became mother to a son Robert Lilburn weighing eight pounds twelve ounces this morning. Sarah Rhodes eleven year old daughter of Mr and Mrs Ross Rhodes of Jasonville admitted for treatment. Mrs William Sciscoe of Linton rural route admitted for treatment. Mrs Clara McCombs of Lyons admitted for observation. Maude Loffland of Worthington underwent a major operation this afternoon. Muriel Meredith of Bloomfield route 4 submitted to a major operation this afternoon. William J Allen of Bloomfield rural route was taken home Wednesday afternoon. Bradley Burnette of Owensburg also taken to her home Wednesday afternoon.
Eleven year old Sarah Rhodes of Jasonville is hospitalized in Freeman Greene County with second degree burns from a gasoline explosion at home. She was helping her father fill a gas tank on the Rhodes car when ignition occurred, burning much of her lower body. Doctors expect recovery despite possible complications.
Mrs Roy Borders won the blind bogey tournament in the first weekly Ladies Day at Linton municipal golf course. Miss Lynn Tindall and Jane Fry tied for low gross, Helen Hamilton had high net, with Mrs Herschel Moore and Miss Elizabeth Hendren taking high gross and Mrs Claude Harris low net. Several Bloomfield members participated, and organizers plan to make Ladies Day a regular feature to boost golfing interest.
The House rules committee agreed to send the neutrality revision bill to the floor for action next week with ten hours general debate. Acting Chairman Sol Bloom of New York leads the bill in the Foreign Affairs Committee, and debate is to be concluded on the second day. House leaders plan to start the debate next Monday, tying it to Roosevelt’s foreign policy.
The House voted 217 to 150 to restore 37 million dollars to a 292 million dollar supplemental war department appropriation. The bill funds 2,290 planes for 1940, educational orders to industry, and Panama canal garrison strengthening, and moves to the Senate.
Barney Connett a 54 year old inventor built a 10 foot one man submarine and battled a gale off Michigan City Indiana six miles from shore. His fish shaped craft heated to 114 degrees with a whirling compass and electric shocks from exposed gadgets as he battled debris and waves headed for Chicago Navy Pier.
The Linton City School Board announced teacher assignments for the 1939-40 year with two changes. Virginia Chatten will not return, and Grace L Cox will move to the Central building from Northwest ward. Reorganization will merge Northwest ward first and second grades, place fourth and fifth in Northeast ward and Central, and assign other grades to Northwest, Central, and Northeast buildings with Willis Kemp and Mary Mildred Lewis among staff.
The Linton Twin Safety chapter met at Red Men hall where a minor accident was reported. George Lawson of Number Four mine mashed a finger moving a conveyor. Ed Rogers discussed three Indiana fatal accidents and a Nova Scotia coal mine three miles below the Atlantic. Roy Hayes received safety shoes as awards. July and August meetings will be held monthly on the fourth Wednesday.
Lionel Bagnard of Zane Grey's California fishing party landed a 1382 pound giant tiger shark in Sydney breaking the 1291 pound Australian record.
Carl Seneff of Odon traveled to Lin ton on Wednesday afternoon for business matters.
President Roosevelt seeks congress approval for an extra budget of self liquidating loans to boost employment. The program funds public works toll roads housing rural electrification and foreign trade loans backed by government guarantees. Admiral Yarnell warns Japan the US navy will act to protect American citizens abroad.
Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Miller Rousch died at 5:30 this morning in Worthington after years of declining health. Born May 20, 1862 in Fairplay township she married James Miller in 1883 and later Alfred Rousch. she leaves three daughters Mrs George McClarren Mrs Elvis Stahl Mrs Silver Freeman and sons Edward David William Carl Fred Lewis Wayne plus a sister 18 grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. The body is at Myers funeral home with funeral arrangements to follow.
Linton city firefighters responded to the Robbins garage on First street southeast for a second spring fire. At 2 35 this afternoon they arrived and extinguished a small blaze with only slight damage reported.
In London and Tientsin on June 22, Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain said Britain would remove British women and children from Swatow with Japanese cooperation, while warning against coercion. U S and Britain sent added warships as Japanese demands for control escalated, with Pillsbury Thanet Pope and H 51 initially refusing to evacuate Swatow harbor.
Local pro Bobby Hess set a new nine hole record at Linton Municipal with 33 strokes. He carded four birdies and was four under par across holes 3 6 7 and 9 while paired with Andy Humphreys of the City park board. Humphreys totaled 42.
