The Bloomfield News notes local growers expect apple yields at 50 to 60 percent of normal with potential for strong pricing to determine real returns. Last year was bumper. this year promising due to better quality and uniform size. Other fruits show good prospects. cherry crop described as excellent.
The Linton Concert band opens its 1988 season with an 8 PM Thursday concert in Linton City Park. The ensemble, in good form, invites public attendance and will announce this week’s varied program. Members across cornet to bass drum are listed with officers to direct affairs for the year.
In Glenburn the first Community sing, sponsored by Greene county WPA recreation department, drew about 700 attendees. Bert Brown led the recreation orchestra through popular numbers, old time tunes, and hymns. Two more programs planned for summer. locals favor organized entertainment.
Members of the Jericho Horseshoe Club come to the Linton courts in the city park to tangle with local tossers in a 7 30 p m match. The Lintonians plan an early arrival to prepare the courts. Sunday they travel to Bicknell to meet the twirlers there.
Word of the death in Okemah Okla of Elijah M Moss 85 formerly well known Linton resident was received today by a niece Mrs Charles Taylor Moss common name Lige born Dec 13 1852 near Linton oldest son of Jeptha and Mary Rector Moss He was a lawyer and prosecuting attorney in Oklahoma County Surviving Roy Moss Goldie Meadows three grandchildren and two siblings Funeral services were held in Okemah.
Funeral services for Helmer Eugene Holmes four year old son of Dewey and Cecil Crooke Holmes were held at the grandmother Mrs Helmer Holmes home in eastern Washington township. The boy died Sunday at the grandmother's home. Surviving are the parents and four grandparents Mr and Mrs John B Crooke of Newberry and Mrs Holmes. The Rev J N A Downey of Bloomfield officiated and burial followed in Prairie Chapel cemetery.
The Waneta club meeting scheduled for Thursday has been postponed to Friday July 8. It will be held at the home of Mrs. Clyde Copeland in this city.
Mrs. Cecil Reed, ill at her home on H street northeast, is somewhat improved but still cannot receive visitors for a few days.
In Chicago on June 21 three Illinois Central System veterans were saluted with engraved gold pass cards for half a century of service. The honorees John G. Stach Chicago John Doheny Harvey NL and Henry Reed Carter Jonesdale Wis all retired this year from the Chicago Terminal division. Nine more IC employees will receive similar honors in upcoming ceremonies before year end.
Captain R V Plew recently returned from a three year stay in the Philippine Islands and China. He spent the weekend with his mother Mrs Della Plew and other relatives in the city before departing Monday for Fort Lewis Seattle to enter the United States Army hospital as a surgeon.
Mud covered tourist sleeping car lifted from Custer creek as two more bodies were pulled free after the Olympian crash. The toll stood at 35 with hopes it would reach 55. workers worried the derrick could topple as they reinforced the site.
Forty five American doctors and nurses adopted a resolution urging Secretary Hull to renew protests to Japan against continued military interference with foreign rights. In Wachow, nine Japanese planes dropped eight bombs on American and British property near Canton. One bomb hit a Standard Oil tank, another hit Texaco and Asiatic Petroleum property, with another landing nearby in the river. The move followed Japan's failure to permit reopening of the American hospital at Soochow.
Gov Lewis Barrows led in Maine with about three to one over Sen Roy Fernald as returns from 582 of 632 precincts showed Barrows 66 223 to 22 104 Fernald. Former Gov Lewis Brann ran unopposed for Democratic gubernatorial nomination.
Federal authorities said more indictments likely as a grand jury continues the espionage case. Key defendants Udo von Bonin Hermann Menzel and Erich Pfeiffer connected to Berlin's defense office, with fourteen suspects abroad and four in the United States facing conspiracy charges.
Minnesota Governor candidates Elmer A. Benson and Hjalmar Petersen remained in a close contest as 1,403 of 3,789 precincts reported. Benson held a slim lead of about 2,500 votes with Benson at 91,501 and Petersen at 88,967, strong in St Louis County and Hennepin, while Petersen led rural areas.

Funeral services for Mitchell Price a longtime Owensburg farmer were held at the Church of Christ in Owensburg. He died Sunday at his home two miles south after eight days of illness. Price born June 22 1865 in Jackson township leaves wife Mary E Lewis and six sons and three daughters. Burial followed in Owensburg cemetery.
The Miners renew their revamped lineup for a Wednesday afternoon game at Linton City Park against Switz City Nine. A large crowd is expected with a small gate fee, as the Miners begin a series of afternoon matches to test their new playing plan.
Jackie Royce on rural route 2 underwent a tonsillectomy this morning. Mrs. John Stanton of Roosevelt Street had a Caesarean delivery this morning and became the mother of a daughter. Both mother and baby are reported doing nicely.
Public urged to attend an open meeting at the CIO hall in Bloomfield beginning at 7 30 this evening. All unemployed men encouraged to attend as Greene county work and related concerns will be discussed.
In Judge Powell's absence due to an ankle injury from a softball game, Acting Judge Edwin B. Long serves as judge pro tem this week. Powell anticipates returning to duties by Thursday or Friday.
