The Republican Washington Herald attacks congressional duty with counts of voting participation in the Senate and House. It notes vacancies from illness or death and questions where absent representatives were during key votes, urging accountability for lawmakers on trips and political work.
Elbridge Sherman seaman second class and son of Mr and Mrs EF Sherman of Route 3 Linton has returned to the United States aboard the aircraft carrier USS Leyte after an extended Mediterranean tour. The Leyte visited Istanbul Souda Bay Crete Alexandria Naples and Gibraltar. The highlight was a visit by the President of Turkey.
Mrs Helena Heitman of War saw Indiana formerly a Linton resident who has been seriously ill is reported to be much improved according to word received here.
Housing expeditor Frank R Creedon reported June 20 that privately financed permanent homes and apartments were started and more completed in the first five months of 1947 than in any comparable period since the 1920s. From January to May 1947 about 280 300 homes started and 300 000 completed, vs 276 000 started and 98 000 finished in the same span a year earlier. May saw about 69 000 new dwelling units started, near April and 2 000 more than May 1946. Creedon said home and apartment construction is now at a rate not reached until five or six years after World War I, while private industrial and commercial construction also rose to record rates.
Captain Nadine Street and her assistant Wanda McGregor announce a farewell service at 7 30 Sunday at the Linton Salvation Army Citadel. They will transfer to Huntington Indiana on June 25 after a brief stay since January.
Jesse A. Barnes of Vicksburg, about 50, escaped serious injury at the New Hope mine northwest of Linton while helping move coal cars on an incline. His motor was derailed by the loaded cars, leaving him with a deep leg cut and minor injuries. doctors described his condition as satisfactory with no serious harm expected.

Eva L. Goble will lead Indiana's home demonstration agents starting in July after Miss Lolla Gaddis retires. Goble earned an MSc from Purdue last week and has four years on Miss Gaddis' staff plus prior service in Vigo County Jasonville and Brazil. She formerly headed the home economics student cooperative at Indiana State Teachers College.
Judge Q. Austin East acting as special judge in Greene circuit court at Bloomfield set aside a divorce decree won by Gale Lehman of Bloomfield against his wife Mary Lehman. Mrs. Lehman has filed a divorce suit against Gale Lehman. The original case was filed by Gale against Mary and the decree was granted.
Mrs Anna Elizabeth Bennie age 69 of Linton died at 10 oclock Thursday night at her home 160 A street northwest after a yearlong illness. Born August 20 1877 in Vermilion Indiana she leaves John M Bennie husband daughter Mrs Montell Cleveland Terre Haute brother Frank Wright Terre Haute sister Mrs O H Foster Los Angeles and nephew Phil Harris Hollywood. Funeral at Welch and Cornett Funeral home Monday 2 PM with Rev Powell Forbes and burial in Fairview Cemetery.
Dr. Robert E. Trout, 91, longtime Oaktown physician who retired fifteen years ago, died at his home Thursday at 10 30 AM. He practiced over fifty years and is survived by numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services set for Saturday 2 PM at his home with burial in Bruceville Cemetery. Schulze Funeral Home of Carlisle handling arrangements.
Two marriage licenses were issued by Frank A Lenning Greene circuit court clerk at Bloomfield yesterday and today. The couples are Kenneth Maynard Dowden of Bloomfield with Lucy Grace Sargent of Farmersburg and George Russell Deckard of Lafayette with Geneva Mae Hudson of Linton. A note mentions ancient Egypts sacred bull whose birthday was celebrated and after death was mummified.
Southern Coal Producers Association plans to testify against a Senate proposal to extend the federal mine safety code for one year. The move follows Krug and UMW head Lewis pushing for extension after an agreed shutdown date for soft coal safety rules.
Officers and directors of the Greene County Shrine club were elected at an overflow meeting at the Linton Country club. J. Howard Lynn named president, Wilson Hixson vice president, Marland G. Haines secretary treasurer, with a six member board of directors. Four guests from Stone Belt Shrine attended and the next meeting is set for July 17 at 7 30 p m at the Country club.
Linton firefighters were called around 11 PM to the Arthur Woodruff residence at F and Fourth Streets NE. A gas heater connection broke and gas ignited threatening the home, but only minor damage was reported.
B. J. Barnes, director, announced that the Linton Stockton high school band will rehearse at 7 o'clock Monday evening in the old gymnasium to prepare for participating in Linton's Fourth of July parade. He urged all members of the 1946 47 band to attend.

About 42 drivers from Black and White Taxicab Co. in Terre Haute Ohio went on strike for a $2 weekly raise. They belong to local No. 144 Teamsters AFL. contracts at other companies were renewed after a March expiry. A U S government conciliator was en route as negotiations continued.
