The Sullivan Daily Times reports a strange bug with horns and pincers in the paper’s menagerie and notes Aaron the wasp visiting the office. A quail nest tragedy leads to 23 chicks being saved for release by the Sullivan Conservation Club.
Secretary of State Cordell Hull stated the Tientsin crisis involves wide international questions with U.S. vital interest. He said the United States was not party to the initial incident that sparked the Japanese blockade of the British and French concessions, but monitors subsequent developments and their China-wide implications.
Mrs. Catherine Moody of near Exline corner west of Dugger died at 11:00 p.m. Sunday after a six month illness. Born November 23, 1889, she was married to Jerry Moody on March 19 1908. Surviving are her husband and six children, two brothers, two sisters, and her mother. Funeral at 2:30 p.m. tomorrow at the Church of Christ in Dugger with burial in Dugger Cemetery.
Speaker Bankhead said House leaders plan to take up the neutrality revision bill next week with Senate cooperation possible adjournment by July 15. He noted many ifs in the adjournment situation after a White House meeting with President Roosevelt.
Major W. E. Naugle and daughter Hazel Taylor of Largo Florida are visiting friends in the city for a few days. He usually travels to Linton each year but was ill last year. He says he is fit as ever and notes this February suits him after the milder South climate. Naugle was formerly news editor of The Daily Citizen.
Velma West a 33 year old life prisoner convicted of hammer murder of her husband near Painesville escaped with three fellow inmates from the Marysville women’s reform school after writing to the superintendent seeking “one more fling before I die.” She pledged to return if her absence caused trouble and said she knew parole was unlikely.
A 100-strong posse of deputies and woodsmen hunted Ray Olson, 30, in the Chippewa forest near Hayward Wisconsin. He killed two deputies and reportedly planned suicide rather than capture, with bloodhounds narrowing a tangled wooded area 20 miles east of Hayward.
Katharine E. Ratliff sues Heber P. Grisby and Gretna Grisby of Terre Haute for 59000 in a Greene circuit court action moved from Sullivan county on a change of venue. The auto crash occurred December 5 1937 in Terre Haute.
A marriage license was issued by Claude Story, Greene circuit court clerk, to Vivian Hollars a Switz City school teacher, and Ralph Sanders of Switz City, a Linton mechanic. The Hollars are the daughter of Charles B. and Mrs. Hollars. Sanders is the son of Bertus and Mrs. Sanders.
Mrs. Roy Hunter underwent a major operation this morning. Wayne Nicholson of Jasonville has been admitted for observation and treatment. William Allen of not Robert Byers was taken to his home Saturday evening. Mrs. Harold Dayhoff of Lyons was taken to her home Sunday afternoon. Roy Combs of Worthington was also taken to his home Sunday.
In Brazil Indiana Judge John W. Baumunk fined Pearl Johnson 450 dollars and sentenced him to 90 days on the State Penal Farm after conviction on two gambling device charges. Johnson’s appeal bond was set at 1000 dollars as he challenged the verdict.
Eskel Beasley county auditor started distributing 309 29.46 spring tax sums to Greene county units in Bloomfield. Total 509 529.46, down from 335 185.19 in June 1958 due to lower rates. Trustees and treasurers collect tax checks. unit amounts listed for Richland Bloomfield Taylor Cass Newberry Jackson Center Beech Creek Highland Smith Fairplay Jefferson Worthington Wright Jasonville Linton Stafford Washington Grant Stockton townships and towns.
Members of the Linton Elks lodge ritualistic degree team travel to Jeffersonville tonight to conduct initiatory work for a large class at the Jeffersonville lodge. The group, 1939 Indiana state runners-up and state champions in prior years, were invited at the Indiana Elks association convention in Evansville.
Federal conciliators called another meeting today of employer and employee representatives to settle the controversy that has closed the port of San Francisco to all commerce needing dock checkers.
Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain told the House of Commons he hopes a local settlement is possible in the Tientsin incident. He said the general position is unclear and Japan’s demand for four Chinese suspects has broadened the issue. No formal Japanese representation has been received, and Britain believed Tokyo did not want to widen the issues.

Individual scores show Linton players with high rings and points, and Jericho stars Houldson Jr and D. Broshears among top scorers.
In Greene circuit court, Mrs. Pearl Miller and Yancey Zachery of Indianapolis pleaded not guilty to a three count joint indictment charging murder in the burglary, murder in the robbery, and first degree murder in the 1933 death of Mrs. Mary Ellis. Judge J Raymond Powell conducted a preliminary arraignment, reading the counts aloud.
In Haifa and Jaffa Arab mobs lash out after a market bombing that killed 18 Arabs and wounded 24. A Jewish man was stabbed by an Arab woman and three bombs were thrown at Jaffa police stations. Despite a daytime curfew in Haifa women protest outside the German consulate seeking Nazi protection.
Funeral services for Reed Jeffers of Lyons area were held this afternoon with burial in Dog Island cemetery. He died after a six month illness due to influenza complications. Survived by widow Stella Youngblood Jeffers and five children, plus one brother and two sisters. Davidson & Son Funeral Home in charge.
Pan-American Airways Atlantic Clipper finished a press preview crossing in 42 hours 28 minutes total, with 20 hours 50 minutes actual flight time over 4650 miles from Port Washington to Marignane Marseilles. Correspondents disembarked at Marignane and proceeded to Paris by Air France.
A Greene County Red Cross meeting to reorganize will be at 7:30 Tuesday evening above Ritchey store in Bloomfield. County chairman Joe Haseman announced district representative Mr Brown will attend. The group will elect officers and plan a first aid program for the county. All interested residents urged to attend. large turnout expected.
