Gas Blast Fatal to Grandpa and Granddaughter in Indiana Home
In Garrett Indiana a gas explosion in the basement of Benjamin L. King’s home left King 66 and his granddaughter Diana Cracraft 10 dead. King lit a match to check a suspected leak in a gas water heater. The house sustained about $2000 in damage and Diana died in Sacred Heart Hospital after King passed away. Mrs. King was not seriously hurt.
Paragon Boy Drowns In Farm Pond Accident
William G Warthen nine, of Paragon, Indiana, drowned Saturday while swimming in a farm pond two miles west of Paragon. His father, George Warthen Jr., recovered the body about 20 minutes later after a companion alerted authorities. Coroner E C Holmes ruled the death accidental.

Mrs. Mary M. Mayo Brown, 76, a former Linton resident and nationally known hat stylist, died Thursday in Indianapolis. Funeral services were held Saturday at Kirby Mortuary, with burial at Cottage Hill cemetery in Brazil. She operated millinery shops in Brazil, Linton, Indianapolis, and Hollywood, and designed hats for film actresses in Hollywood. Survivors include husband Jack Brown and brother Harold Voit of Terre Haute.

Martha Jane Watkins, 5, of Bicknell was fatally struck Sunday after breaking from her parents near an amusement park. Police said the car was driven by Max Prentice, 18, of Gandbarn, who collided with the fleeing child.

Mrs. Viola Mitchell Doublemont Dies at 66 in Linton
Viola Mitchell Doublemont 66, longtime Linton resident, died at 2:30 a.m. at her home along Lin ton route three near state road 59. Born January 21, 1890, she was a Salem church member and survived by husband Louis, two sons Gerald Dan and Gene, two brothers Cleve Mitchell and Alex Mitchell, and sister Mrs. Sarah Pope. Gene, twin to Gene, died in World War II and a daughter Margaret died in infancy. Funeral arrangements are set at Welch and Cornett Funeral Home with services Wednesday at 2:00 p.m. and burial in Fairview cemetery.

Keith Allen, 20, of Bloomfield rural route, sentenced to two to 14 years at Indiana Reformatory Pendleton after conviction in Sullivan circuit court for issuing fraudulent checks. Trial began Thursday with seven women and five men jurors. verdict delivered Friday after two hours of deliberation. Prosecutor Paul Whitlock called 15 witnesses. defense offered one. Allen previously related to James Murdock, who hanged himself in Sullivan jail last Thursday. Allen allegedly issued about thirty checks totaling 800 to 900 dollars, including a bogus May 15 Sandborn bank check and another at Carlisle.

Two Hoosiers Die in Monticello Plane Crash
Harold E. Kirkham 42 of Monticello and Edward V. Hurlbert Jr 24 died when their small private plane crashed nose first into a field south of Monticello after taking off from the local airport. The crash occurred over Lake Freeman as the plane skimmed the water and clipped trees near Oakdale Dam. Both occupants were killed instantly.

Indianapolis driver Bob Sweikert, the 1955 Memorial Day and national driving champion, died after his sprint car hit a retaining wall in Salem Indiana. Seven thousand spectators watched as the car crashed on lap five of a 30 lap feature, careened into a guard rail, overturned and toppled into an embankment.
