Secretary of Labor Lewis B. Schwellenbach died at Walter Reed Army Hospital in Washington at 3:40 a.m. CDT at age 33 from heart failure. He had served since 1945 amid a period of severe labor unrest, and President Truman learned of his death by telephone. He was married to Anne Duffy and had earlier fought ill health since 1946, insisting on daily work until shortly before his passing.
A 1941 coupe driven by Marion Jolly Moody of Worthington collided with a John Wachtell Corporation truck at the Buck Creek bridge four miles east of Linton. Moody attempted a left turn then swerved right, the truck he moved to the right to avoid impact. Auto damage $400, truck $100. No arrests.
Parents of children turning six before January 1 1949 are urged to attend a meeting at 90 H Street Northwest at 7 30 this evening. The gathering invites others interested in starting children in school this fall.
Homer W Day 70 a Spanish American War hero died at 5 10 PM Wednesday at his 640 F Street NE home after fifteen years of failing health and seventeen weeks bedrest. He served two years in the Philippines under Col Arthur MacArthur earning the Silver Star and Distinguished Service Medal and was recommended for the Congressional Medal of Honor. Born October 8 1877 in Lewis he lived thirty years in Linton and worked in coal mines before illness forced retirement. He leaves widow Ada Crawford a son William H Day two Evansville grandchildren William Robert Day and Carol Ann Day and several nieces and nephews. Funeral at Welch and Cornett Funeral Home Saturday 10 AM with Waldo Hoar and Rev Fletcher Duncan. burial Fairview Cemetery. Local United Spanish War Veterans to lead graveside services.
Fred Graper of Linton is among 87 seniors to receive Bachelor of Arts degrees at 5 p m Sunday exercises at Franklin College. Dr Luther Wesley Smith, executive secretary of the Board of Education and Publications of the Northern Baptist convention, will speak. Lilburn B Moseley, pastor of the First Baptist church at Pittsburg, will deliver the Baccalaureate sermon at 10 30 a m Sunday in the college chapel.
Lt. Col. Ward W. Martindale son of Mr and Mrs Claude Martindale of Sullivan is set to attend the Air University Maxwell AFB Alabama next class beginning July 10 for about five months The program trains officers for command and staff duties at air units
In Shelbyville Indiana the body of 66 year old Robert Rutherford was identified as the man found in a cave along the Flatrock River. Relatives recognized him by his clothing and authorities say he had been missing since March. Sheriff Marlow noted no foul play and suggested death may have occurred three months prior.
An amended affidavit in the State of Indiana versus Margaret Brinegar Carter, 28, of Owensburg, filed in Greene circuit court, charges abuse and neglect and cruelty to children. She will stand trial Monday morning after previously facing assault and battery. Betty Lou Carter, the stepdaughter, is the alleged victim.
The Civic Garden Club will gather Monday at 1 45 p m at the Conservation Club. Members should bring small containers and their own flowers for arrangements.
One of Greene County’s largest tax distributions in history is being made by County Auditor A W McLaughlin after spring collections of 591865.69 were apportioned by County Treasurer Frankie Justus Jr. Units receiving funds include the County General Fund 1229225.35 and other major allocations, totaling 323633.91 to named townships towns and schools with the remainder to roads and other county funds.
