A Brazil tragedy prompts a drowning warning as 14 year old Carl Edward Rogers drowned in a strip mine pond after losing his grip on an inflatable inner tube. The notice urges swimming only with lifeguard supervision and warns about water depth and current hazards near sand bars.
Mr. and Mrs. George Parks and daughters Betty Lynn and Delinda Kay of Lind Washington visit Mr. and Mrs. Osa E. Parks in Lin ton during a several week vacation.

John Paul Branscom 23 a former Linton resident died at his Mishawaka home after a lengthy illness dating from 1947. Born May 14 1925 in Linton he was the son of Charles and the late Ruth Branscom and survived by several siblings. The body will be returned to Welch and Cornett Funeral Home with services at 1 pm Thursday at the funeral home and burial at Grandview cemetery Bloomfield.
After Memorial Day, stores and banks in Linton will remain open Thursday afternoon in the usual post holiday pattern as announced today. The brief note confirms Monday shutdowns in observance of Memorial Day were observed.

Minor League Commissioner George Trautman banned pitcher-manager Bernard De Forge of Reidsville and Florence official Ed Weingar from baseball for life after De Forge admitted taking a $300 bribe to throw a May 14 game against Winston-Salem. A criminal case could follow under North Carolina law. Police in Winston-Salem began intensive investigations but require more evidence for charges.

Officers of the Republican central committee of Stockton Township were re elected at a meeting at the local party headquarters. Herbert Priest was re elected as township GOP chairman. Also re elected were Mrs. Helen Yount as vice chairman Mrs. Evelyn Dye as secretary and James Sargent as treasurer. County Republican Chairman Frank A Lenning of Bloomfield presided.
Mrs Bertha Candler Sims 73 died at her daughter Mrs Laura Leek’s Terre Haute home at 6 15 PM Tuesday. She belonged to Burris Chapel United Brethren near Linton. Survived by four daughters Daisy Comer Jennie Templeton Laura Leek Nellie Padgett. one son William Candler. one sister Ada Miller. eleven grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Body to Thomas Funeral Home Terre Haute then Leek home. Funeral 1 PM Saturday Rev L E Peyton officiating. Burial Roselawn Cemetery.

Mauri Rose won the 500 mile Memorial Day race in Indianapolis earning 42 200 including 26 150 from the purse and 16 650 in lap and accessory prizes. Bill Holland finished second for 19 100 bringing the two to 61 900.
Eight Greene County youths are among 1 801 Purdue University honors recipients for the first semester. The list honors students with 5 0 GPA or higher, with 44 achieving a perfect six point average. Notable local honoree Joseph D Walls of Bloomfield, is among the six point mainstays. Local 7114 plans a special meeting at Eagles Hall in Bicknell Thursday at 7 pm. President Maurice Williams calls the meeting to address urgent business and urges all members to attend.
The seven Arab nations accepted a United Nations four week pause in the Palestine conflict today but warned they will resume war unless Israel is dissolved. Arab reply pressed that peace efforts must lead to full Arab control of Palestine. Israel accepted the UN cease fire plan but objected to several assumptions. In Tel Aviv Arab forces pressed Jewish positions as fighting continued across key areas including Negba.
The body of Pfc. J. Wayne Borders 37 killed in action March 21 1944 in the Philippines is being returned to Dugger for burial. He served since 1942 and fought in Hawaii New Guinea and the Philippines as part of the 38th Mechanized Cavalry division. He is survived by his parents the late Mr. and Mrs. Columbus Borders and brother Tony Borders of Dugger.
About two hundred youngsters gathered at High School park Tuesday for the grand opening of organized play at the recreation area. Recreation leaders Roy Williams and Charles Hoskins announced that lights are back in at the tennis courts and that they can be used day or night.
Leon Perry of Linton was fined $1 and costs on a public intoxication charge in Mayor Arthur M. Grass court. A 90 day suspended sentence was imposed after an arrest by Linton police last night.
County Clerk Frank A. Len ning issued the first marriage license of the month at the Bloomfield courthouse. Rexall R. Crites and Emma Jean Bingham, both of Bloomfield route one, received the license.
A Washington high school senior, Robert Kidd, 16, was injured and unconscious when the car he rode in overturned four times on state road 54 near Switz City. Driver George J. Cramer, 18, escaped injury as Kidd was treated and released from Freeman-Greene County Hospital. A separate incident on road 57 near Elnora involved an auto-transport driven by Norman Kistel overturning. Kaiser autos were damaged and Kistel was treated for injuries. State Police Investigator Ollie Hayek led the inquiries.
The Indianapolis Times reports 1 837 GOP delegates at the June 11 convention in Indianapolis. 935 voted with 918 expressing a governor preference. Jenner leads with 34.3 percent, Creighton 29.3, Burch 22.7, Helmke 13.7. On half the votes Jenner would have 630, Creighton 540, Burch 416, Helmke 252. results cover at least 88 of 92 counties. The paper cautions straw votes cannot predict first ballot outcomes.
The Navy Department lists C. R. Earlywine of Terre Haute as unaccounted for after a liberty boat from the U S S Kearsarge was swamped Monday night near Norfolk Virginia. Earlywine is a seaman apprentice aboard the Kearsarge.
Federal Judge Goldsborough suggested he may order John L. Lewis to bargain with the Southern Coal Producers Association on a new soft coal contract. He warned a walkout at contract end could be a national tragedy amid July 1 strike risk. United Mine Workers oppose negotiating with the southern group, calling it non-signatory to current terms.
