A series of in hospital updates reports births, surgeries and discharges. Marie Goad of Lyons welcomed a boy while Bob Fry of Linton had a daughter born yesterday. Other patients include Isaac Butts and Gladys Harstine who underwent operations, Ruth Abel and Lu cille Barnard listed among admissions and births, and several residents released or homeward bound.
General Eisenhower states he cannot accept a presidential bid this year. The declaration disrupts the stop Truman movement and leaves the Democratic convention in Philadelphia without a clear anti Truman candidate. Truman aides say the president was not surprised and believes Ike is honorable.
Kelly Petillo a 44 year old racing driver said he would return to Indianapolis to face an assault and battery with intent to kill charge related to a razor attack on his ex secretary Naomi Shofner 25. He was arrested in Corunna after appearing in midget auto races where he won the feature. Petillo initially resisted extradition but agreed after consulting his Indianapolis attorney.
Concord New Hampshire reports plans to construct a 3000 foot chair lift at Mount Sunapee as part of a $375 1 million development transforming the mountain into a regional recreation center.
Four persons paid fines of 1 dollar and costs totaling 11 dollars each in the court of Justice William L. Jackson today and Monday. They were arrested Sunday and Monday by Linton police. Fined were Verlin E. Reed Bloomfield Nicholas Keller Linton Eugene Richards Indianapolis and James E Boyte Bloomfield.
About 40,000 miners walked out on all steel company owned and commercial mines in Pittsburgh area. Some see the move as sympathy action, others say workers acted on instructions from UMW President John L. Lewis. Eleven commercial mines idle after ten day vacation. contract offers rejected over union shop clause.
Hollywood July 6 Up Film star Carole Landis 29 committed suicide in her Brentwood home by overdosing on sleeping tablets. Police found the body at 3 pm Rex Harrison said he knew no reason for her death and nothing in the mansion hinted at her secret.
Laura E. Carroll of Sullivan died at Mary Sherman hospital at 1:30 a.m. after a 13 week illness. She belonged to the Baptist church and is survived by several nieces and nephews. Her remains were moved to Newkirk Funeral Home, Pleasantville, then to Bethel Baptist Church near Sandborn for viewing before a 10:30 a.m. funeral conducted by Rev. Odis Mitchell. Burial at Bethel Cemetery.
United Press reports Fourth of July vacation ended with more than 620 fatalities from Friday 6 p.m. to Monday midnight. Highway deaths reached 283, drownings 191, plus five fireworks deaths, 10 in plane crashes and 13 in other incidents. California led with 54 deaths, Michigan 41, Pennsylvania 48, New York 34, Texas 33, with notable drownings in Louisiana and North Dakota.
About 1 100 Indiana coal miners idled as the nations captive mines struck for a new contract. Knox Consolidated mines at Vincennes paused American No. 3 shaft halted on rumors of a worker injury. officials denied any accident. UMW District 11 said most Hoosier miners had returned after a 10 day vacation.
DeMolay Mothers will gather in the hall there on Wednesday evening at 7 30 o clock. All members are urged to attend.
In Prague a five hour Sokol parade drew 70 000 marchers and 111 bands as crowds waved American flags and shouted support for Eduard Benes and Jan Masaryk. Police failed to stop the protest, with several arrests reported amid calls for the republic and Masaryk.
Jack Fordyce, son of Mr and Mrs Homer Fordyce of Linton, injured in an Indianapolis collision last Friday, is reported slightly improved at General hospital. He regained consciousness this morning and is expected to be X-rayed today.
In Bloomfield today the Greene circuit court issued a divorce to Sylvia May Bailey restoring her maiden name Sylvia Smith from Glen Madison Bailey. A new case William E Chestnut et al vs Samuel Meek et al was filed to quiet title. Four marriage licenses were issued to Roy Dyer and Dorothy Stanton LePorte Linconton. Stores and banks in Linton will remain open Thursday afternoon this week. When a holiday falls midweek they stay open on Thursday afternoon. Barber shops, however, will not be open Thursday afternoon.
Indiana reported nineteen deaths over the three day Fourth of July weekend from traffic crashes and drownings. Ten lives were lost in seven traffic mishaps, eight in drownings, plus a five year old boy killed in a farm wagon fall.
Senators Capehart and Jenner announced the Army will activate Camp Atterbury in Indiana in early 1949 with a regular army division and draftees. They said 12 000 to 15 000 officers and men will compose the camp’s complement. Congressman Landis quoted Gen. Collins saying the base will be included in the Selective Service training program and will definitively have a division.
About 500 Tennessee farmers arrived in Indianapolis under the Indiana Farm Bureau to survey Hoosier agriculture. Led by O. R. Long of Knoxville, they will visit county Farm Bureaus, attend a dinner, and begin a statewide tour.
Berlin Communist party calls for the city to join the Soviet zone and Western Allies to withdraw. Matein cites Greater Berlin under Moscow compass with a two year eastern plan. ADN notes London circles weighing withdrawal amid airlift record of 918 tons. Western protests to Zarubin expected in London and capitals.
In London on July 6, Yugoslav Communists push for Marshal Tito’s re election to leadership. Tanjug reports Belgrade meeting to elect delegates for the July 21 fifth party congress. Delegates urge re election of the central committee and Tito, praising wartime leadership and socialist path.
