Mr and Mrs Garland Ladson return from California with tales of a 17.5 pound yellowtail from Glendale and a 12 pound barracuda won on Catalina Island. A Des Moines judge jokes about a bicycle built for one and suspends the fines. Ads warn of harvest machinery dangers and note old mail fraud schemes and early scams about marriage and cures for stammering.
Tom Turnbull formerly of Linton died recently in Battle Creek Michigan. Funeral and burial services were held there. He is survived by his widow Katie Duchaney of Linton, a son Donald Turnbull and a daughter Mrs Alverna Morris both of Battle Creek. His youngest son George was killed in World War II.
A Swedish DC-6 and a Royal Air Force York transport collide in a rainstorm over Northolt Airport near London killing 39 people including two Americans. Investigators race to determine cause amid scattered wreckage and flames. Sir Edward Gent and six crew members aboard the York perished.
Jack Fordyce of Rushville son of Mr and Mrs Homer Fordyce of Linton is in critical condition at General Hospital Indianapolis after a traffic wreck at Lindhurst Drive and Maddison Road Friday at 425 pm He was returning from Martinsville where his car was repaired Two other occupants suffered only minor injuries Friends are asked not to call the Fordyce home for several days and may contact his office if they wish Visitors may be impossible for some time
Mary Ellen Maddox 70, longtime Linton resident, died June 30 at her West Los Angeles home from a heart ailment. Born March 1 1878 in Dallas Texas she was daughter of Perry and Elizabeth Gray. Survived by Henry Maddox husband Chester P Maddox son Burlingame Calif stepdaughters Ernes tine Evans Ruth Finch brother Otis Gray and several nieces and nephews. Funeral at 2 pm Wednesday at Welch and Cornett Funeral Home with Rev Powell Forbes and burial in Fairview Cemetery. Linton Eastern Star lodge to conduct graveside services.
Milford Young, 22, was fined $1 and costs totaling 11.80 in the Linton court after a Saturday arrest for public intoxication. Dave LeVeque faced the same fines and costs for a Sunday arrest, with a pending charge of drawing a deadly weapon under Mayor Grass. he pled not guilty and a July 14 trial is set.
Mrs. Paul Pershing of Indianapolis learned that the casketed remains of her husband arrived in the United States and would be brought to Linton for burial. The body, escorted by military guards, will be taken to the Welch and Cornett Funeral home.
Loren Booker of Indianapolis broke 50 straight clay pigeons and Paul Young also hit 50 at the Sherwood Field range in Lee-Sherrard. Scores included Charlie Turtle 25 Fougerousse 24 Livingston 24 Frump 23 Griffiths 23 H Tryon 23 Hayek 22 Starcup 22 and Thrasher 22. The Linton Community Conservation Club thanked Sherwood-Templeton coal company for equipment donations for skeet-field leveling.
The Linton Eagles improved to ten wins and four losses by defeating Vincennes American Legion 7-1 in Friday action with Tate on the mound fanning 10 and eight hits for seven runs. Sunday they shut out Franklin 6-0 behind Lynch with 13 strikeouts. Woolsey and Truitt had two hits each. A large crowd witnessed Friday’s game.
Six Linton boys are to appear in the court of William L Jackson local justice of the peace on Thursday for violating Indiana fireworks laws. They were arrested by Linton police after Friday and Saturday nights incidents. Police said the firecrackers and other fireworks came from Illinois.
The Board of the First Christian Church will meet Tuesday July 6 at 7 30. All members are urged to attend.
The Greater Linton club launched its annual Fourth of July celebration with one of the city’s largest crowds at the High School park. Entertainment by Mighty Hoosier Shows runs until 10 p.m. followed by fireworks and a human cannonball act at 10:30 p.m. Prize winners include Best decorated float Stockton township 4-H clubs first, Linton Boy Scouts second, Linton Girl Scouts third. Best merchandise display Hastings Maytag Appliance first, Jon out second, Johnston Motor Sales third. Best decorated pet outfit Switz City garage first, Fix-It shop second, Bradley tractor third. Best decorated bicycle Miss Burch first, Miss Hatton second, Gerry Fisher third. Youngest child with rig or pet Taylor Hildebrand. Oldest horseback rider Bud Sosh, 72. Prize money available at the club office on East Vincennes Street.
Two oil workers were critically burned in a butane tank explosion near Princeton Indiana. William Glick age 42 and Joseph Sauret age 24 remained in critical condition at Gibson General Hospital. A third worker, L E Gash age 24, was injured less seriously in the blast during drilling operations.
Pro government reports say nationalist forces won new successes in Shantung and East Henan. In Shantung they captured Wanteh ten miles north of Taian on the Tientsin Pukow line and attacked Taian suburbs.
Two arrests on charges of violation of Indiana motor vehicle laws were made Saturday night by State Policemen Joe Feeney and Ollie Hayek. Roy Murl Sanders of Bicknell was arrested for failing to stop before turning onto A street northeast. James O Brian of Linton was arrested for operating a car without a driver's license after police checked a car to see if the muffler was illegal. Sanders and O Brian both to appear July 10 in the court of William L Jackson.
Mrs Eliza Mowery 77 died at 7 Sunday morning at 908 South Meridian Jasonville where she lived. Born April 19 1871 in Sullivan County she spent most of her life in Jasonville. Survived by two daughters two sons two brothers 18 grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Funeral at 230 Tuesday at Jasonville Assembly of God with Rev Zella Anthony. Burial Union Cemetery.
Word comes of the June 24 death of Mrs. Julia Kurtz in Tucson Arizona at 80. Funeral services were held there the following Sunday. She was a former Linton resident with survivors Hugo Schloot a brother Elizabeth Haseman a niece and Henry Schloot a Switz City nephew.
Indiana Democrats hold 30 unpledged delegates and 26 votes as they wait for presidential sentiment to crystallize in Philadelphia. They praised Truman at the Hoosier state convention and have not bound their delegates, with a caucus planned next week to decide. State Chairman Ira Haymaker previously said Truman would likely receive Indiana support if nominated.

The Fourth of July crash on state road 54 near Linton killed Floyd S. Boone 37 of Dugger route one and Guernard Harrell 46 of Vicksburg, with Malcolm Gardner 50 of Detroit seriously injured. Gardner remained in Freeman-Greene county hospital in serious condition with a fractured arm and leg and concussion. Police credited excessive speed and a leftward maneuver for the collision between Boone’s southbound car and Harrell’s northbound vehicle, causing both to overturn and explode into debris. Funeral services for Boone were held at Hickory church in Sullivan county with burial in Hickory cemetery. Harrell’s services were to be held at Vicksburg Baptist church with burial in Lebanon cemetery. Gardner, a coal mine air boss and U.S. Marine veteran, was hospitalized in improving but unstable condition. The fatal crash was Greene county’s first in 1948.
