Tonight at 7:30 the Industries for Linton Inc will meet at the local public library to elect new directors. Members with certificates may vote, as the group continues its job this year to attract factories and boost local employment.
The Linton American Legion Independent basketball team beat Plainville Lions 54 to 47 for their first win in a 13 team tournament at Plainville gym. O'Hern led Linton with 27 points. The event continues with Linton facing Vincennes on Wednesday at 8 PM and wraps up Friday evening.
Members of Delta Theta Tau will attend a party at 7 15 this evening at the home of Miss Billie Heenan 259 First Street Northwest.
In Vincennes Indiana on January 20 the second murder trial of Lawrence Johnson a former Oakland City night marshal ended with a hung jury and a judge dismissed the panel. The eight to four split favored acquittal mirroring his first trial. Johnson 47 pleaded self defense saying Miller a larger man could overpower him after arrest. Prosecutor Benson did not comment on a third trial.
Chicago union officials testified at a National Labor Relations Board hearing that publishers misrepresented the Typographical union as unyielding. Joseph Rhoden said both sides used strong wording but softened terms in final agreement and noted a 60 day cancellation clause as a last resort to protect the union’s existence under Taft Hartley law. The dispute centers on wage demands and the legality of a binding contract versus conditions of employment.
An elderly couple Francis J. Baer 77 and Nora 75 burned to death in their farmhouse seven miles east of Frankfort Indiana yesterday. A passing truck driver saw the flames and neighbors could not rescue them. Officials say the blaze likely started in a coal kitchen stove.
Miss Dorothy Neumeyer of Worthington underwent major surgery today. Mrs Berniece McKim of Linton had minor surgery today. Mrs Dallas Malone of Newberry welcomed a son Ned Alvin today. Mrs Florence Brown of Linton was discharged today. Mrs Robert Livingston and baby went home to Solsberry today.
Edwin W. Pauley told senate investigators his commodity market profits, nearly $1,000,000 since the war, were earned honestly and legally with no inside information. He cited Baruch and cited public reports as the basis for his belief prices would rise and urged vindication from critics.
A four month old boy died on Mayor Hubert Humphrey’s desk in Minneapolis after his parents were told the General Hospital denied admission 12 hours earlier. The mayor ordered an immediate police and coroner investigation.
Indiana forecast reports rising temperatures for the week with near normal highs and single digit lows in the north and mid teens in the south. Rain expected in the south on Saturday while a new cold front pushes across the region and into the Ohio river valley.

Mrs. Mark Hockgeiger aged 80 passed away today at Mt. Carmel Illinois. She was mother of Violet Hockgeiger plant manager at Real Silk Hosiery Mills Plant No. 4 in Linton. The body lies in state at Short Memorial Chapel Mt. Carmel with funeral services at 3 p.m. Thursday at the chapel. Burial will be in Highland Memorial Cemetery Mt. Carmel.
Reports from Athens indicate Greek guerrillas suffered about 500 casualties around Platanos in southern Greece as clashes pushed fighters back toward Arahova. The war ministry noted 13 army troops killed and 58 wounded.
Washington Republicans on the Ways and Means Committee push for House approval of the full 5.6 billion Knutson tax cut bill. Some members favored trimming the cuts to ease passage against a potential veto. A small bomb exploded near Gandhi during his evening prayer in New Delhi. Gandhi was unharmed as the wall cracked. nine people were injured. Police arrested a young Hindu, Madanlal, found with a hand grenade, suspected of opposing Gandhi's fast to reconcile Hindu Muslim factions. Four men were seen in a car nearby.
The Linton Fire department rushed to the W. O. Cox residence at 50 I Street NW after 8:50 this morning. Fire, likely sparked by a chimney, burned a small roof hole with only minor damage reported.
Reports from Jerusalem say a 400 strong Arab force from Lebanon crossed into Palestine and attacked Yehinam near Acre in a large battle. A British communique noted a Jewish police vehicle vanished and later burned. Jews attempted an arms raid on the Sara camp but were repelled by two sentries. The arms race between Haganah and Arabs fuels a go slow order by Haj Amin el Husseini.
In Terre Haute Indiana a mother saved her three children from a blaze yesterday but two daughters Nancy 2 Barbara 3 and baby Richard 10 months perished. Barbara died at Union Hospital and Richard died this morning. Firemen said coal tips may have started the fire while the children slept. Mrs Fields made three rescues before returning to a neighbor and the father was at work. One child survived in poor condition and Mrs Fields is listed as serious.
Stockton township trustee Robert C. McFadden announced the Black Creek school will close until furnace repairs finish to stop smoke and fumes entering classrooms. He expects completion by Thursday and plans to resume classes Thursday morning unless informed otherwise.
In Fort Wayne Indiana S M Goodwin began a speech on self seriousness when club members staged a walkout test gag. The incident left him speechless as the audience dissolved in mock protest.
John Foster Dulles accused the Soviet Union of trying by any means short of war to wreck Europe. He urged Congress to back a strengthened Marshall Plan with a defense pact and economic union to bind Western Europe, warning that abandoning aid would cost the United States more later.
