Glen Curtis renowned Indiana high school basketball coach will address the Linton Downtown Quarterbacks club banquet at the Moose hall Wednesday at 6 30 p.m. He has led four teams to the state title and coached at Indiana State Teachers College as well as pro teams in Detroit and Indianapolis. The event honors local high school teams coaches and the district band.
Mohandas K. Gandhi ended his 122 hour fast in New Delhi at 12 32 p m after leaders pledged to pursue peace. He secured Moslem safety assurances and a peace pledge signed by 200000 residents amid UN mediation efforts on Kashmir.
Joe V. Burris 35 died Saturday afternoon at his home five miles northeast of Jasonville after a heart attack. He worked at the Baker mine near Sullivan and is survived by wife Mildred, five sons, a daughter, his mother, five brothers, six sisters, and other relatives. Funeral services set for Tuesday at 2 PM at Coalmont Church of God with burial in Peavy cemetery.
George Dorn Harvey Harris and Charles Wheeler of Indianapolis spent Sunday in Linton with Mrs. Clara Alexander visiting in the community.
A District Deputy Grand Exalted Ruler will visit the Linton Elks Lodge Wednesday evening with a class of candidates to be initiated and a banquet to follow. The session opens at 7 30 p m and the district leader is John Eckert of Madison. Local Exalted Ruler J Howard Lynn urges member attendance.
Firefighters battled five blazes in Linton over the weekend. A brooder house owned by Harry McAtee in West Linton suffered near total loss from an overheated brooder stove. Sunday a roof fire at Martin Shubla's South Linton home caused minor damage. A fire at Ed Powell's garage on East Vincennes Street damaged the building and coal but saved much of the structure. A grass fire in West Linton caused no damage. A Third Street Northwest auto fire revealed an overheating motor with no oil.
Greene circuit court at Bloomfield granted one divorce and issued two marriage licenses while five new suits were filed. New suits include Lester Bailey versus Cecil Ring to foreclose a garage lien and Nelson Bennett et al versus John L. Hanna et al to quiet title. Minnie Pearl Hahn was granted a divorce from Edward Hahn this morning and Walter Lee Christenberry and Fayette Jane Morrison among others were issued licenses.
Seymour Indiana January 19 Three persons were indicted in Jackson County for the tavern fight death of Irby Eacret 57 who died four days after the brawl at the Avenue Cafe Elmore 51 Opal 29 charged with voluntary and involuntary manslaughter Roy Nordloh indicted for maintaining a common nuisance Nordloh operates the tavern Bonds set at 2500 for the Elmores 200 for Nordloh.
The Linton high school Miners defeated the Evan Arrows 46-42 at the local gym after a tight game. Led by Elkins and Robinson late, Linton pulled ahead 46-42 as the Arrows failed to close the final gap. Linton shot 17 of 53 while Evan Arrows hit 16 of 60, and the Miners advance to the Wabash Valley tournament opener against Switz City Midgets at 7:00 p.m. Thursday.
A 54 year old invalid Miss Turner and her 82 year old mother Mrs Elkins died in a Kokomo fire. Their home burned as a relative tended livestock. Ernest Rudy found his mother and Miss Turner perished from burns. Six deaths reported across Indiana including Evansville fires and Indianapolis casualties.
The Linton City Parent-Teachers Association will meet at 7 30 tonight at the Northwest Ward school building. President Fredrick Sheppard says the Health committee will present a report on recently conducted examinations.

Several residents in Jasonville and nearby towns underwent surgeries or were admitted today with weekend dismissals listed.
The Linton J C Penney store announced staff changes. Stanley Bush moves to Cape Girardeau Missouri as assistant manager there, while Kermit A Horn transfers to Linton to become assistant manager here. Horn begins his duties today. Bush will serve as assistant manager at the Cape Girardeau store.
Miss Marjorie Magruder, formerly employed in Schenectady, N Y, spent the weekend with her parents Mr and Mrs Ray Magruder. She departed yesterday for Indianapolis where she has accepted employment.
Police records show at least nine deaths from Friday night through Sunday amid extreme cold. Major crashes occurred on Ind 46 near Batesville and Ind 67 near Mooresville, with multiple injuries including a high school custodian and a Cincinnati driver.

Mrs Lizzie White age 82 died at 4 10 Sunday afternoon at John Bedwell's home in the Cass community after four weeks of illness. Born Aug 25 1864 she was daughter of Thomas and Polly Ann McPeak Secrest. Survived by two stepsons Mack White Anderson and Charles White Sullivan route three a brother George Secrest Linton and two sisters Mrs Ida Soliday and Mrs Rosa Smith Lyons. Services Tuesday 1 30 at Jenkins Funeral Home Lyons with Rev Paul Burris officiating burial Marco cemetery.
Mr and Mrs Sam Masters of Linton attended the funeral of Mrs William Purcell in Washington recently.
