Community leaders from coal mining areas protest a proposed Indianapolis ordinance restricting truck delivered coal. They warn of retaliation against city merchants and note 1500 tons daily, 10000 miners, 1000 trucks could suffer, arguing the measure harms local economies and misattributes smokey fires to proper burning methods.
The public is invited to attend a Christmas program at Nine Mile Methodist church at 7:30 Friday evening. The program features songs readings and entertainment and will include a play by the church's Sunday school young people.
U P report states administration push to finish action on housing amendments in the special session collapsed. Congressional leaders urge rapid Senate action to back President Roosevelt's recovery drive emphasizing private business reliance with federal funds minimum and private investment maximum. Wagner leads the effort and signals possible Thursday adjournment if needed.
The Baltimore mail steamer City of Hamburg sent an SOS reporting sinking rapidly after a collision with an unidentified Italian steamer ten miles east of Terschelling Island in the North Sea. The ship carried about 70 crew and one passenger, an American woman listed as Miss Peters, with other passengers set to board at Southampton for Baltimore.
Sam Wymer was taken to his home in this city this morning. Robert McCallum of Jasonville was admitted today for treatment for injuries from a mine accident. His injuries include a sprained ankle and minor cuts and bruises. Raymond Gillum of Bloomfield was taken to his home this afternoon.
Donations to date for the Linton Associated Charities include Community Chest groups Elks ladies Tri Kapps Band Parents Club SRCO and various clubs. Amounts range from 1.00 to 50.00 with a total of 121.45 raised so far.
Fire units were dispatched to a roof blaze at the home of Mrs. Selena Cavalier in South Linton with flashes and smoke causing heavy damage. Crews also extinguished a fire in Walter Wolfe’s car on G Street Northeast from faulty wiring with minimal damage reported.
Donors are urged to turn in all contributions to the Linton Associated Charities by noon Wednesday. Volunteers pack baskets for distribution to needy families. WPA Recreation Department and County NYA workers repair donated toys for needy children. Toys or donations of groceries canned goods and clothing can be left at the city fire department or called in at 5841 before noon Wednesday. A Grand Theater benefit show Saturday raised funds to aid community families.
Bloomfield High School travels to Linton to face the Miners in a midweek basketball showdown as Bloomfield aims to extend an undefeated season. Bloomfield’s starting five includes Battle O Neal Laughlin Halderman and Oliphant with Beasley Smith Fish Jones and Adkins for Linton. Coach Goodman predicts a close game despite Bloomfield’s 4 0 season record and recent 88 32 Jasonville win. Largest 1937 38 crowd anticipated.
The Daily Citizen reports an error in Monday s item naming the bond signer for Tillman J Bough former Greene county clerk charged with embezzlement. It states Leland Barkley Bloomfield banker did not sign the bond and the correction clarifies the actual signer.
Curtis Richardson a 56 year old coal miner from Dugger dies after a weeks long illness. He leaves six sons and two sisters. Funeral planned at the Dugger Baptist church with burial in Samaria cemetery. In another note Dr E V Bull receives a $1800 back salary check after a Monroe court ruling over Lew Good's mayoral challenge.
Robert McCallum was hospitalized at Free man Greene County hospital after an accident at the Little Betty mine. He sustained facial cuts bruises and a sprained ankle with X ray pending but initial indications suggest injuries are not serious.
Lin ton stores set late closing times for the remainder of the week. Five and ten cent, department, and clothing shops stay open until 6 pm Tuesday and Wednesday, and until 8 pm Thursday. Drug stores close at 8 pm except Friday when they stay open until 9 pm.
The senate civil liberties committee says labor spying is common in American industry and that one agency used spies from about 2500 business firms. It notes many spies were union officials and that the firms list reads like a blue book of industry.
The court rejected Alphonse Capone’s bid to cut one year from his income tax evasion sentence. Capone, serving ten years at Alcatraz, sought an extra year in Cook County jail on release. He argued inconsistencies in sentencing on three felonies and two misdemeanors.
A band of burglars targeted railroad cars and depots in Indiana towns including Linton Jasonville and Lewis. Two C M and St P depot cars were entered with candy and cigarettes stolen while Jasonville saw two cars looted and Lewis one. The Bloomfield high school building also reported minor thefts. Police fear a motorized crew conducting widespread depredations with plans to sell loot. sugar bags were seized in Linton last week and officers pursue leads on disposal channels.
Boy Scout troop No. 55 held its annual Christmas party in the First Baptist church basement with games and contests. Wayne Geatches received a Star Scout badge from Roy Williams of troop No. 57, the first in his troop to earn the rank. A tree sale, an over night hike planned for Dec. 28 at the Scout Camp north of Linton, and refreshments for the scouts and guests Rev Harry J Bailey and Scoutmaster Roy Williams were announced.
The Alpha Delphian club meeting scheduled for last week will be held Tuesday December 28 in the Linton public library with James Humphreys as guest speaker. Members are urged to attend.
Pasadena firemen will spend their spare time repairing toys for redistribution as Christmas gifts to the poor. They will continue this work through the holiday season.
Walter Lucas, who has worked in Anderson for a year, returns to Linton to take a barber position at the 34 Barber Shop on West Vincennes Street.

Indianapolis Dec 21 Applicants for liquor or beer licenses must have clean records in the state Gross Income Tax division before licenses will be issued by the Alcoholic Beverages Commission. Chairman Hugh A Barnhart said an agreement with Clarence A Jackson will have tax records checked to ensure full compliance and justify license issuance. The cooperative plan aims to ensure honest business practices and deny licenses to those evading other taxes.
