Switz City outlines a 1950 census size and opens a new 3500-seat gym built for 185000. Dedication Saturday night will run between Linton and Switz City games with ceremonies led by state officials and local dignitaries.
The Alpha Delphian club of Linton schedules a Christmas party at Mrs. E. T. Aikin’s home at 7:30 Tuesday evening. A fifty cent gift exchange will be enjoyed.
Circles one and two of the Women’s Society of Christian Service at First Methodist Church plan a Christmas party at 7 30 tomorrow night hosted by Mrs William Collisson per church officers.
Hospital admissions include Manley Waggoner of Sandborn and Kayana Hoover of Lyons. A son named Ronald Dae Kramer was born to Mrs Kenneth Kramer of Linton, weighing seven pounds eight ounces. Dismissals include Wilson Truebrood and multiple patients from Lyons Linton Crane and Crane areas, among them Mrs Claude Foster and Mrs Bobby Plann with baby.
Linton residents anticipate the annual Christmas program by Alpha chapter of Triad at the First Baptist church at 7 30 Sunday evening. The event features high school ensembles and Triad performers with musical numbers from Vespers to excerpts from the Messiah. Rev Royden Read to give the invocation and Miss Esther Shaw among honorary ushers.
Mrs. Corda Della Quick 70 died at St. Vincent Hospital Indianapolis after residing in Carlisle and Sandborn. Survived by daughter Mrs. Travis Shankel of Clinton Iowa, brothers John Spencer Sandborn and Charles Spencer Dugger, sisters Mrs. Hinkle Vincennes and Mrs. Alsman Carlisle, two grandchildren. Funeral at Ives Poindexter Sandborn with Rev. Odus Mitchell officiating. Burial Bethel Cemetery northwest of Sandborn.
The Greene County Nurses Association will hold a Christmas party at the home of Mrs. Anna Belle Humphreys at 7:00 PM Tuesday. Mrs. Alma Anderson will serve as co-hostess. A one dollar gift exchange is planned.
Deaconess Nola D. Yoder acknowledged a gift of canned vegetables and fruit and towels to the Glenburn Rest Haven home. The donation came from members of the Ladies Aid Society of the Lincoln church.
The Navy’s Seamaster jet bomber prototype exploded during a routine test at Martin’s Baltimore plant and crashed into Chesapeake Bay. One crewman was killed and three others were missing. Divers searched the 55 foot deep waters as Navy investigators probe the crash and a second Seamaster readies for initial taxing tests later this month.
Murphy company workers nationwide received cash Christmas Gift Bonuses totaling over 275000 dollars. Local Linton G. C. Murphy store employees, excluding officers, shared in the payout with 26 recipients receiving sums up to 80 dollars plus a special gift for those on military leave.
In Glendora Mississippi white residents vow justice in the shooting death of Clinton Melton a Black man. Elmer Kimbell cotton gin manager is held after allegedly firing on Melton following a dispute. Sheriff Strider notes no pistol found and Kimbell remains in custody awaiting a hearing.
A new Sunbeam troop, Salvation Army girls’ group for ages eight to eleven, will be inaugurated at 7 30 PM Friday at the Evangelical United Brethren church. Capt Floyd Root announced the event with leaders Mrs Dora Hackler and Mrs Gertrude Graves, and guests from Linton Kiwanis and Goodfellows. Members include Marilyn Jones Peggy Hunt LaDonna Hackle Zerelda Seaney Brenda Graves Sharon Graves Cheryl Goodman Wanda Speirs. Public invited.
Surgeon General Leonard A. Scheele urged parents to vaccinate children now to avoid a polio shot backlog by May. A committee of leading polio authorities with Jonas Salk backed continuing three injections over eight months to maximize protection and extend Salk vaccine supply.
Harlen McDaniel 4 years old died at his Newark area home after a lingering illness. He was born April 8, 1881 near Calvertville, son of Simeon and Margaret Carter McDaniel. Survived by widow Verna, one foster daughter May Turner of Bedford, and brother Everett McDaniel of Bloomfield route one. Funeral at 2:00 pm Saturday Newark Baptist Church with Rev. Glen Freeman officiating. Burial in Newark Cemetery. Body at Jenkins and Son Funeral Home in Bloomfield. in state at family home.
Congratulations are due to the progressive people of Smith Grant and Fair Play townships for completing new classrooms and a gymnasium at Switz City. The gymnasium will be dedicated Saturday night. Additional projects at Worthington Bloomfield Jasonville and Linton show Greene County patrons pushing school improvements to provide outstanding educational opportunities.
In Amboy Indiana two bank employees cashier Paul Norris and teller Catherine Lindley ignored a nervous bandit with a false pink nose as he demanded money at Farmers State Bank. The robber fled in a late model Ford after Miss Lindley reached for an unloaded gun. police scouted the area with roadblocks.
A temporary mild spell ends as temperatures fall below freezing across Indiana. Highs today range from 30 to 38 degrees, with lows from 10 to 22. Cold weather continues Friday with highs 26 to 33, after a Wednesday readership of 56 at Evansville and 40 at South Bend. Saturday forecasts call for partly cloudy and less cold conditions.
Two bandits robbed the Hoff Market in Marietta Shelby County soon after opening. They wore overcoats with turned up collars and brown caps and used a revolver. Loot was in $1 to $20 bills. Police report the total at $1394.
Good attendances mark the Linton Full Gospel Mission at 148 B street southeast as Rev. Alford Robbs from Terre Haute preaches. Services are held daily at 7:00 pm at the church.
Jerry W. Jones of Linton Indiana has been promoted to specialist third class in Japan where he serves as a message center clerk with Headquarters Army Forces Far East and Eighth Army. He joined the Army in August 1954 and arrived in Japan last February. A 1954 Indiana University Bloomington graduate, he is accompanied by his wife Janice.
President Eisenhower met with Treasury head Humprhey Budget Director Hughes to consider delaying tax cut proposals until spring to ensure a balanced budget. Dulles Wilson and Adams joined the private talks before the National Security Council meeting at Laurel Lodge in Thurmont Maryland.
Oolitic Indiana principal William Wagoner reports normal attendance after a two day student protest over the suspension of four varsity players by coach Russell Jackson. The dispute involved failure to report for practice and profanity allegations denied by Jackson.
U S authorities sought confirmation from Russian officials about two American soldiers arrested in East Berlin for allegedly attacking a Communist nightclub performer. The request marked the second in 24 hours as the soldiers were handed to Soviet custody. Western officials feared possible hostage use to secure a Russian officer’s release.
