Miss Mary McKim, assistant deputy in the Greene circuit court, is named first deputy to Clerk-elect Claude Story. Pauline Lynn of Linton is chosen as second deputy for January in the Lewis office.
In Chicago on December 8 police arrested twelve people after clashes between Chicago Evening American and Morning Herald and Examiner pickets and workers. Two women and four men were taken after a brush with circulation truck drivers outside the paper building.
Preliminary plans were made at a City hall meeting for charitable work in the Christmas season. Miss Nola D. Yoder was elected chairman and Steve Stalcup secretary treasurer. Donations go to Stalcup at the Greater Linton club office and food donations to the Fire department for basket assembly. A benefit movie show is planned for December 17 with admission as canned food. Potato week in schools runs December 19 to 23. Applications for baskets begin at the Greater Linton club office.
A Bloomfield Bloomfield report says the Greene circuit court grand jury may indict James Jackson Batchelor and Sanford Slim Humphreys for the Mary Ellis murder, with possible joint indictment and trial delays. Batchelor was turned over to Sullivan county authorities amid venue change plans.
Otto Clark of Vicksburg was admitted for treatment. Loren Bledsoe of Linton route 3 underwent a major operation this morning. Charles Wenders of Linton route 2 was dismissed this afternoon.
Mrs Morris Hudson and her daughter Leah Rea of Sullivan have been visiting Mrs Hudson’s parents Mr and Mrs Rankin Falk in this city and returned home yesterday after their stay.
Linton Junior High Welders basketball team seeks a fifth consecutive win Friday night against Dagger Junior High in the Linton gym. The B team also holds a four win mark. A squad has 134 points for and 56 against. Thirty eight players from grades five through eight have played this season. Doors open 6:30 pm. Admission 10 cents pupils 15 cents adults.
Federal agents, National Guardsmen, and state police hunted a band of thieves who stole 2000 rounds of shotgun shells and unknown machine gun bullets from the Stoutfield National Guard airport arsenal in Indianapolis. The break in was found today after guards were off duty. The loot weighed 500 to 400 pounds. Authorities link the Noblesville armory theft last Friday to the same gang.
William Carr 83 of Marco died Wednesday morning at his home after a two year illness. Born in Indiana he was a former farmer and longtime member of the Marco Methodist Church. Surviving are his widow and six children from Nelsonville Ohio Midland Indiana Bloomington and Linton plus a stepdaughter Edith Padgett of Marco. Funeral at Marco United Methodist Church 1:30 Friday conducted by Rev Robertson. Burial in Elnora Cemetery.
Claude DeCourcey of Linton is critically ill with typhoid fever after being taken to a Terre Haute hospital Tuesday. His sister Mrs. Omer Dodds and relatives were notified as his condition worsened. Will DeCourcey travels to Terre Haute to offer a blood transfusion to save his brother's life.
Thomas J. Mooney, once a radical labor leader, marks his 56th birthday in San Quentin Prison. It is his twenty third birthday behind bars since his 1916 San Francisco preparedness day bombing conviction that killed ten people, with a pardon expected after Governor-elect Culbert Olson takes office.
Police reported seven miners killed in a cave-in at the Bell asbestos mine in Thetford Mines Quebec. Nine men worked underground when walls and roof collapsed after rain. Two escaped.
At the Eighth Pan American conference in Lima delegates moved to back a continental solidarity program. Pre conference developments suggested approval of President Roosevelt's plan for unity against foreign aggression.
Ralph Myers forty five held in Jasper county jail after confessing to a plan to murder his father George M. Myers seventy three to gain a seventy five thousand dollar estate. Two state policemen posing as gunmen arrested him as he paid seven hundred dollars to a go between. He had previously paid a hundred dollars in cash for a prior attempt that vanished.
Charles L. Wolford, Linton post master, joins national call for early holiday mailing. He urges securely wrapped parcels with complete addresses and return labels in the upper left corner. Parcel post can be insured for a small fee and used as an identification mark if the label becomes unreadable. Letters must be excluded to avoid letter-rate charges.
Two Vincennes youths Albert Pemberton and Charles George admitted stealing the new car of Orville Stout state senator elect from his home on Broadway. They also confessed to taking two license plates in Princeton and switching one onto the police report vehicle. Both plates were recovered and the youths were jailed to face vehicle taking charges.
French mounted police dispersed several hundred students after a march toward the Italian business district in Tunis as tensions rose between French and Italian groups. Reinforcements were sent from Algiers to prevent further demonstrations.
Mrs. John Hill of Bloomfield attempted suicide twice by ingesting bi chloride of mercury. She is hospitalized in Freman Greene county, condition reported good, though doctors doubt the 15 grain claim. She earlier took sleeping pills and obtained the tablets from a Bloomfield physician. The bottle disappeared and she was rushed to the hospital after the incident.
