Local leaders push to extend corporate limits for industrial growth amid holiday season lull. Community groups organize surveys led by Industrial Engineer Martsoll while public meetings highlight scalable gains and broader civic effort.
Murl Tincher, 31, of Linton, pled guilty to burglary of the Sam Terrell filling station in Switz City in August 1938 and was sentenced to three years in Indiana State Prison at Michigan City with a $250 fine. He was disfranchised for three years. Charles Lash, 24, of Linton, arrested with Tincher, has not appeared in Greene county court. Both were arrested Nov 28 in Terre Haute as they left Vigo county Judge John W. Gerdink’s court after a suspended sentence for second degree burglary was issued. They are jailed in Bloomfield amid questions on when Tincher and Lash will be moved or appear in court.
The body of Dr. Russell H. Bready, 62, a Bainbridge Methodist minister, was taken to Pioneer, Ohio for burial beside his wife. His son Robert, 29, faces Ross County grand jury action in January after confessing to shooting his father.
Greene county WPA recreation department workers appeal for used toy donations as supply runs thin. Last year they repaired hundreds of donated toys and plan to continue, painting and mending them to give to needy children in the community.
Linton Metropolitan lodge 1938 Knights of Pythias held an initiation with first and second ranks conferred. Candidates attended from Bicknell and Linton as a large crowd gathered at the local lodge hall, with several visitors from out of town.
The District Deputy Grand Exalted Ruler Dr. A A Pielmeier of Vincennes will visit the Linton Elks Lodge on North Main Street with an 8 pm program Wednesday. A 6 pm banquet will precede the meeting, hosted by Wallace Anderson and the local lodge as they anticipate a large turnout.
A Greene County anti tuberculosis association report shows $185.92 raised from Christmas seal sales across towns including Bloomfield Deans Jasonville and others. Receipts by post office totaled $184.92 with items such as Bloomfield $46.45 Lin ton $62.22 and Worthington $18.00. The campaign continues through Christmas urging wider use of seals on packages and letters.
Word arrives of the birth of a son on December 1 to Mr and Mrs Kenneth Canady of Chicago Illinois. The baby named Preston Wayne is the first child in the home and the first grandchild of Mr and Mrs Clarence Canady of this city. The father is a former Linton resident.
Additional Christmas trees to be sold to local merchants for decorating their shops were received this morning. Steve Stalcup secretary treasurer of the Greater Linton club announced. Trees were supplied by Linton Boy Scout troops and may be purchased by any merchant.
Members of the Alpha and Beta chapters of Triad rehearse for a Christmas program to be presented at United Brethren church on Sunday evening December 11. The event will feature an elaborate setting and is open to the public. Directions say similar programs were held last year in this city and at Sandborn. Mrs Wayne Hamilton directed last year’s program. Further plans will be announced later.
Mrs. Clovis Rawley of Worthington was discharged this morning. Mrs. Oral Callahan was taken to her home this afternoon. Mrs. Ida May of Lyons is reported slightly improved.
After a request to move from Greene county, James Jackson Batchelor’s murder case will be transcripted for Sullivan county. He is jailed in Bloomfield and likely to be moved tomorrow. Trial is set for the Sullivan circuit court’s next term starting the third Monday in February. An Indiana attorney general’s rep will aid Greene County in the Humphreys case in Greene circuit court on Monday December 19, with Rhodes K Myers and Paul Haywood listed as defense counsel.
Boy Scouts from all county troops are expected to attend the monthly court of honor tomorrow evening at Linton Methodist church where merit awards and advancements will be announced. Troop 53 members are repairing Christmas toys in the basement of the local Baptist church and presented their scoutmaster Roy Glenn with a smoking set as a birthday gift.
Indiana governor M Clifford Townsend in his first press conference since the November election said he will cooperate on revising state election laws and revisited liquor law revision while scrutinizing the state board of accounts He called Indiana the bright spot of democracy despite losses in Congress and in the state House.
German foreign minister Joachim von Ribbentrop and French leaders Edouard Daladier and Georges Bonnet sign a cream colored parchment pledging peaceable settlement and respect for frontiers. Guards surround the event following the Von Rath assassination a month earlier.
A 19 year old Indiana youth from Mentone admitted shooting and killing Clyde town marshal Neil Fowler after a 73 cent gas station hold up. Fowler chased Rex Bush who would be charged with first degree murder. The youth has a brother and a sister who are Bible students in Chicago.
The Pennsylvania Railroad seeks to end the miners' train service between Bicknell and the Fourth Vein mine at Westphalia. Indiana Public Service Commission Councillor Ralph Hanna says the hearing will be held Thursday December 15 at 3 p m in the statehouse rooms. The petition was denied at an October meeting.
James W. Prather, former Wheatland Farmers and Merchants State Bank president, announced the state Department of Financial Institutions approved full payment of a 100 percent dividend to stockholders. Checks will be issued from Security Bank and Trust. if not called, they will be mailed.
A cable railway into the Princess colliery at Sydney Mines broke today. Fifty miners aboard cars were hurled down the incline. eight were found dead and many more injured. Officials warned the death toll could rise from estimates ranging 10 to 30.
The Daniel Boone homestead near Reading Pennsylvania will be rebuilt as a permanent memorial. The Pennsylvania Historical Commission leads the restoration to become a premier history attraction. Historians vow authenticity and simplicity with pioneer furniture and utensils on display.
Henry Risser, a music teacher born in Alsace Lorraine and then an alien, told District Judge Benjamin during a citizenship oral exam that the United States ought to have a dictator. The remark came at an awkward moment and was reported by Reno observers.
President William S. Knudsen of General Motors testified before the monopoly investigation committee in Washington warning that eliminating the patent system would be bad for industry. He noted patents have aided car development and extended the vehicle's life, though the system means little to GM today.
Members of the Linton Eagles lodge announce an invitational open house at 7 o’clock Thursday evening at their home. A special entertainment program and talks will be provided with refreshments. All lodge members are urged to attend as the group plans to welcome many guests.
