Mrs Catherine Froeschke of Linton learned early this morning of her mother Mrs Clara Balkhe's death in Cape Girardeau Missouri after a major operation. Balkhe had been recovering when a sudden decline ended her life last night. Balkhe visited Linton several times and had many friends there. Funeral arrangements not yet announced. Balkhe was taken to Walthers Funeral Home in Cape Girardeau and may be moved to 1637 Themis Street.
The Supreme Court upheld government prosecution of antitrust charges against the Aluminum Company of America in New York Federal Court and approved state taxation of income of federal contractors. The decision lets the government proceed with its dissolution action despite the company’s efforts to halt the suit.
A Ford Tudor sedan reported stolen Saturday night in Linton from Rex Wyatt Dugger auto dealer was found in a ditch one mile south of Jasonville on State Road 59, according to Linton city police. Investigators are examining the case.
President Roosevelt returns to Washington as congressional rebels attack his farm bill and push to revise taxes to aid business. Senate and House leaders await counsel, with 15 days left in the emergency session that has produced little action.
Irvin Dierdorf of Jasonville had a minor operation this morning. Glen Greenwell of Lyons underwent a major operation. Gerrell Gray of Bloomfield is recovering from a minor operation this morning. Jackie Frankenfield of South Linton is recovering from a major operation performed Sunday evening. Bert Hendren was sent home to Bloomfield Sunday afternoon.
In Linton the Greene County WPA recreation department and NYA workers repair and repaint toys for needy children. Dolls wagons trains and more are fixed at the Hixon and Sahm store and donations are welcome via pickup or drop off. A benefit party December 8 funds paint and supplies for the project and distribution will be through Linton Associated Charities.
A Greene County Bar Association banquet was hosted by Edwin B. Long, Bloomfield attorney and Greene County attorney, in honor of his recent marriage. About sixty guests attended the event.
Chicago December 6. A staff pediatrician reports a minor refinement in treatment technique as a first step toward controlling a virulent unknown disease at St Elizabeths hospital nursery. Eleven newborns have died and seven more are threatened. The illness causes acute intestinal inflammation and is usually fatal within 24 hours.
Twelve jurors were seated in Hammond Indiana to determine the penalty James Dalhover must pay for the slaying of State Policeman Paul Minneman. The jury was approved after questioning. the defense may reject members. Dalhover, sole survivor of the Al Brady gang, pleaded guilty weeks ago.
A heavy blaze last night in Pleasantville destroyed the two story residence of Mrs. Sadie Booker. Abe and Mrs. Booker were moved to safety at Sam Wilson’s home as volunteers fought the fire with buckets and extinguishers. The fire started near the ceiling between the first and second floors and spread despite efforts. Estimated damage not given but believed substantial.
The Linton Alpha and Beta Triad chapters presented a Christmas Festival of song before a near full First Christian church audience. A string ensemble opened with Holy Holy Holy Lord God Almighty and the Hallelujah chorus followed by solos and a twilight finale.
The board of the Linton Christian church will meet at 7 tonight in the men's classroom. Chairman B F Clark calls the session of much importance and says the new pastor will attend.
Linton City police probe three weekend burglaries at the Farm Bureau office Third street southwest Rooney Brothers filling station West Vincennes street and the Linton Stockton high school. A counterfeit coin found in the Farm Bureau cash drawer. safe opened attempts failed. Rooney station door forced with no losses. high school desks ransacked but no valuables missing.
Charges of assault with intent to kill were filed in Greene circuit court against Ernest Wolfe of Sullivan rural route following a shooting in Linton early Thursday. Wolfe surrendered at the Linton police station and was taken to the Greene county jail. the incident involved a conflict with tavern owner Doc Glover Bone, with both firing pistols and no injuries reported.
Charles A. Lindbergh and Mrs Lindbergh reach New Jersey after nearly two years abroad aboard the President Harding. The couple, believed to be visiting family, remain discreet about their plans and whereabouts as they are seen returning to the United States.
Seventeen bombing planes pummeled the Nanking waterfront as Americans prepared to evacuate aboard the Panay gunboat. Japanese officials said an advance guard was near Nanking, signaling the capital’s imminent fall.
