Morehead City North Carolina August 31 The Weather Bureau said a powerful Atlantic hurricane would miss the North Carolina coast with winds near 100 miles an hour. The storm plied the coast near beach resorts and military bases as warnings were lowered south of Cape Hatteras and kept from Cape Hatteras to the Virginia Capes.

Second Gusher Discovered Near Wilford in Sullivan County
A new oil well near Wilford east of Shelburn boomed today, joining the initial Siepman farm site. The second gusher, brought in last Saturday, reportedly yields about 100 barrels an hour while the Siepman well produces roughly 100 barrels daily, with Midwest Oil company contracting the new well's entire output.

New Eagles Hall Project Starts in Linton
The Linton Eagles lodge begins building a new $100000 home to replace the hall destroyed by fire on November 28 1947. Architect William J Strain of Bloomington oversees plans with Charles J Lane George Bailey of Bedford handling construction and Mack Tyler of Linton plumbing and heating. Ground floor measures 47 by 100 feet with a 27 by 28 foot club room and a 44 by 47 foot social room, stage, kitchen, and offices. Second floor will await completion with a lounge and meeting rooms plus toilets, front and rear stairs, steel construction, stone brick and glass block facade, colored plaster, and oak trim. Completion expected by January 1 1949.
