In a rural column from Linton Wisconsin the writer laments fewer house flies this summer and muses on old sanitation practices. He recalls past water sources and shared towels while noting public health advances and gratitude for better disease control.
Firefighters responded to a blaze at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Roy Armstrong at 2 30 p m Friday. A Servel ice box overheated and caught fire damaging the outside, the motor, and causing minor smoke damage to the house.
United Press reports seven people died in Indiana traffic crashes Saturday and Sunday. Victims include Robert Norris and Bruce Whitaker among others. several drownings occurred when semi trucks overturned in ditches.
Mrs. Gwen Norris of Bloomfield gave birth to Paul Stephen on Friday. Mrs. Ola Mocherman of Linton welcomed a daughter, Judith Ann. Sunday morning William Weaver of Linton had an appendectomy Saturday night. Other entries list surgeries and medical treatments across Crane Linton Hammond Dugger Worthing and Route 2.
Mrs Mollie Elizabeth Cook aged 83 died at 9 30 this morning at her son Emery Cooks Bloomfield rural route home after a lingering illness She is survived by three sons Emery Orley of Indianapolis and Floyd of Illinois The body was taken to Jenkins and Sons Funeral Home in Bloomfield pending funeral arrangements
Charles W. Reed aged 80 a retired coal miner died at 4 15 pm Saturday at his home 520 South Virgil street Jasonville He worked in many coal mines in the Jasonville field before retiring due to injury He is survived by his widow six daughters one sister 16 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren The body was taken to McClanahan Funeral home then to daughter Mrs August Leturgez home Funeral services at 230 pm Tuesday at the Leturgez residence with Rev Aud Plew and Rev Jack Craig officiating burial in Lebanon cemetery
Mrs Lena Titus of Vincennes Indiana brought a clump of 13 pawpaws to the Citizen Office on Friday afternoon saying her yard tree was loaded with fruit and she might find more.
Sunday skeet results at Lee Sherrard Park show Linton Osborn Rupert Livingston Sinders Gam bill Goldberg and Tryon with scores ranging from 23 to 21. Linton Osborn Rupert tied for top score with 23 each.
The Reed family celebrates its second reunion with a basket dinner at Bloomfield City park on September 5. All family members are invited to attend.
The Lyons Community Club reported a record crowd at the Lyons Fair in Lyons Municipal Park over four days. About 25 000 attended with over 18 000 paying admissions and a Friday night crowd near 10 000. The closing Saddle Horse show drew more than seventy horses with East er Velvet owned by Bob Johnston of Linton among winners. A 4000 pound team owned by Herbert Vincent of New Holland won the heavy weight team pulling contest with a total of 8530 pounds. runners up were Rossie Burch and others. Barbershop quartet performances by the White River Valley chapter drew strong notices for potential 1949 inclusion.
Private funeral services were held for 78 year old Lauretta Okes a former Linton resident who died Friday at Union Hospital Terre Haute. She was the widow of Elza Okes and survived by two daughters Dorothy Gillooly and Marie Effner both of Terre Haute and brother Joe Nolting of Linton rural route.
Bob Griffiths won the 1948 Indiana Class A all gauge skeet title at Evansville, edging L S Pratt, Loren Booker and George Heaney among about ninety shooters. The Capitol City Gar club won the team championship. Griffiths achieved the notable feat after roughly a year in skeet shooting.
Fifty three Greene county men aged 25 registered for the second wartime draft at two sites. At 1 15 PM thirty men born in 1922 plus after Aug 30 reported at Linton High School for registration, while 23 signed up at Bloomfield Veterans Service office in the courthouse. Men born in 1923 register Tuesday and Wednesday, those born in 1924 register Thursday and Friday. Township registration areas differ by location with Linton hosting some towns.
Nathan Bennington of Elnora route one is to appear at 8 o'clock this evening in the court of William L. Jackson to answer charges of reckless driving and driving at a speed greater than safe or prudent. He was arrested at 11 45 o'clock Saturday morning by State Policeman Joe Feeney on state road 54.
In Linton courts over the weekend, Billy Hutchison Jr. of Dugger, 22, and Marion Woolsey of Linton, 20, were fined $1 plus costs for reckless driving and related traffic offenses. Milford Young of Linton, also charged with public intoxication, received a $1 fine with costs and an 60 day suspended sentence.
In French Lick Indiana on August 30 Henry Schricker began his bid for a second term in the Indiana state house. He received a ceremonial white hat from the Indiana Democratic Editorial Association marking his birthday and his campaign for good government. Len Barkley joined him as the Democratic vice presidential candidate attended sessions with about 850 editors and party workers amid heat and high spirits.
Evansville Aug 30 A state labor official met with United Electrical Workers CIO leaders to avert state intervention in the Bucyrus Erie plant strike. Vanderburgh court had restrained mass picketing after a violence flare while Governor Gates said court order would be upheld and decisions on further steps would come after talks.
Eight people were treated at Freeman-Greene County Hospital after two traffic accidents and a 10 year old Linton boy was treated for cuts and bruises on South Main Street. Names include Jerry Worl Nellie Lucas William Lucas Francis Newkirk Alfred Ferguson Gene Bennington Donald Edwards Marylou Bedwell Charlotte Bedwell and the World boy. Police reported the first crash occurred Saturday night on State Road 54 near State Road 57 and involved eight locals and two Indianapolis residents. The second crash happened Sunday evening involving Francis Newkirk and William Lucas with damage around $100 per car. The World boy was struck by Paul Strietelmeier but suffered only a minor head cut and was released. Strietelmeier was exonerated.
The Monroe County Fall Festival opens Thursday September 16 and runs through Saturday September 18 in Ellettsvistr. The 10th annual event features the theme De nom acy at Work and the slogan Hi Neighbor Welcome Back. Officials educators and entertainers are scheduled, with many programs broadcast.
