Dr. E C Brandenburg, superintendent of the Indiana conference of the Evangelical United Brethren church and president of the Indiana Pastor's Association, will address the Linton church at 7 30 Sunday evening. Rev William Medcalf invites the public to attend.
The Senate backed a private-building housing bill 48 to 36 in a special session, overriding a rebel committee and rejecting Truman’s call for public works and slum clearance. The House has a similar bill awaiting conference.
Five miners were killed and eight were injured at the Capels No 1 mine of New River and Pocahontas Consolidated Coal Co near Welch West Virginia. A 25 foot slate fall 18 inches thick struck cars as about 75 men rode the haulageway on the last shift trip. Inspector Chatfield called it the worst haulageway fall in southern West Virginia coal field history. The mine employs about 390 workers, with 126 on the departing shift.
Two B-29s completed a round the world trip that began in Tucson on July 22 arriving at Davis Monthan Air Base. A third B-29 crashed at Aden last month with 17 of 18 crew killed.
In Hollywood Florida a navy DC-3 transport collided with a small Stearman trainer, killing ten aboard and leaving two student pilots alive after parachuting to safety. Authorities corrected an earlier eleven-death count, saying the bodies were heavily mutilated and nine men were identified as victims. The incident occurred during a refueling approach to Miami from Norfolk via Puerto Rico.
Senator William E Jenner of Indiana is named chairman of the Dewey campaign speakers bureau. He will serve with Ben Whitehurst, head of the speakers division, and will start immediately. Brownell says the bureau will be a powerful force for an aggressive campaign. Jenner was first appointed to the Senate in 1944 and elected in 1946.
The Keith Riley Construction Co. of Goshen, already repairing State Road 7 in Greene County, won the Knox County widening and resurfacing bid. The low bid of 363 863 87 covers 11.99 miles of Road 47 from Bicknell to the Knox Greene line. The firm also continues Greene County work and the Highway Commission announced additional contracts for two road maintenance and two bridge projects.
Ten surplus Navy trucks will be sold at the U S Naval Ammunition Depot at Crane on August 20. Bids must be filed before August 20 with C W Hatfield at the depot.

William House of Dugger faces charges of public intoxication and operating under influence after a rear end collision on US High 41 north of Pimento. Gordon Luce, his wife Thelma Luce, and niece Gladys Pruner were badly injured. Luce drove and was rescued from a demolished car. The crash occurred about 9 15 p m.
Claude Moss known as Broker Moss arrives at his Long Beach California home by air from Chicago Illinois. He spent a month in Freeman Greene county hospital and his condition is reported to be much improved.
Miss Ruby Crain of Switz City won the grand sweepstakes and Miss Rose Scecina of Linton took the reserve grand sweepstakes at the Greene county 4-H Dress Revue in Humphr eys Park marking the county show’s finale. A crowd of about 3000 attended with a Linton high school band concert as part of the event.
The Communist Party at its National Convention outlined campaign strategy for the November elections backing Henry A Wallace and the Progressive party. Eugene Dennis, secretary and top organizer, said the party must be led by the working class and its most class conscious sector.
George J. Carnegie sues Bonnie R. Carnegie in Bloomfield Greene circuit court seeking a divorce. Complaint outlines grounds for dissolution of marriage and related relief.
William Keith Ridgeway of Bloomfield had a tonsillectomy, and Mrs Leland Inman of Bloomfield had a tonsillectomy this morning. Mrs Donetta Elkins and baby of Crane were discharged today. Gene Tucker of Linton was sent home from the hospital.
Harold William Moehlmann of Linton is awarded the U S Navy Air Medal for meritorious achievement in aerial flights as an Aircrewman of a patrol plane during operations against Japanese forces in the Pacific War from August 1944 to July 1945.
U S Ambassador Bedell Smith and Anglo-French envoys met Foreign Minister Molotov for three hours at the Kremlin in a renewal of high level east west discussions on Germany. Smith avoided details, noting Molotov and Smirnov attended but Stalin not present.
An Indianapolis butcher, speaking anonymously, blamed high meat costs on housewives who refuse cheaper cuts. He said many shoppers demand only the best and that women who complain about prices often choose steaks or chops when buying.
Dr. Lee Todd city health director says women try on shoes barefoot in slipper shops spreading athlete's foot and seeks an ordinance requiring stocking wearers. The call aims to curb foot infection by enforcing hosiery in footwear stores.
The Greene circuit court clerk at Bloomfield issues a marriage license to James P. Burdge of Sullivan and Iva Viola Edds of Dugger.
Rep. John McDowell says a significant quantity of uranium oxide and nitrate was shipped to Moscow in 1943 and 1945 as part of wartime aid to the Soviet Union. He cites shipments from Great Falls Montana and Port Hope Ontario through the S W Shattuck Chemical Co and the Canadian Radium and Uranium Corp to Col A N Kotikov. Public hearings on Soviet espionage were recessed as Truman withheld loyalty information.
More than 100 workers picketed the Libby plant in Brazil Indiana delaying the first run of catsup chili sauce and tomato juice. Strikers demanded a ten cent an hour raise. The company offered five cents but refused to raise to eighty three cents per hour. Pickets stopped tomato trucks from nearby farms. Plant manager Guy Fairbrothers said he hoped to begin production with available help. No violence occurred.
The weatherman said temperatures would rise toward August highs after a recent cold spell. Indiana observers expected a two to four degree rise above normal over the next five days with fair and warmer conditions statewide except for a brief cool snap in northern Hoosierland Monday.
