Eleven men from east of Dugger gathered at Forrest Skaggs’s home last Friday to roof his six room house. In four and a half hours the job was finished with a picnic lunch served afterward. The effort followed Skaggs’s long illness and recent return from a veterans hospital.

J W Carroll 83 retired auto mechanic and longtime Sandborn resident died at his home from a heart ailment at 2 25 pm Monday after several years of declining health. Born November 30 1864 he was the son of Andrew Jackson and Elizabeth Brewer Carroll. He married Martha Matilde Brewer on October 3 1886. Survived by three daughters Dollie May Frye Rose E F Walters and Bessie G Frye eight grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Funeral 3 pm Wednesday at Poindetter and Wampler in Sandborn with Rev Otis Mitchell officiating burial in BeBeth cemetery.

Wilbur Thompson of Los Angeles set an Olympic shot put record at 56 feet 2 inches and Mel Patton of Southern California won the 200 meter dash as the United States claimed four gold medals in the day. Plans for Draft Boards in Indiana Announced
Indiana director of selective service Lt. Col. F. Lyle Summers said five Hoosier counties will have multiple draft boards and 11 others will host two county draft units. The state will have 90 local boards with four in Marion, three in Lake, and two in Allen St Joseph and Vanderburgh counties. Twenty two counties join two county units under one board while 65 other counties will have one board. All Hoosiers aged 18 to 25 must register Aug 30 to Sept 18.
