Fire at Midland Destroys Store and Home in Greene County

A fire early this morning at Midland six miles north of Linton caused about 3500 dollars in damage. The Ketchell store and residence were destroyed along with an adjacent home occupied by a widow named Jewell. Jasonville and Linton fire departments responded. Midland lacked water and local volunteers collected a 30 dollar purse for the crews. Ketchell’s insurance reportedly expired. Jewell’s coverage was via Ross Green agency. The blaze began in Ketchell’s kitchen from an oil stove line on D Street N W and Fifth Street northwest, near an improved gravel road in Stockton Township. A long petition followed seeking highway improvements under the Three Mile Law, naming many local signatories and officials.
