Letter from James O. Broadhead arguing the proposed constitution limits railroad taxation powers and imposes general restraints on state debt. He praises sections on uniform taxation and minority protections, urges adoption to curb oppressive taxation and promote cheap transport.
A widow and six children from Wilson County travel to Illinois seeking aid after losing their belongings on a town square. Neighbors donate money and food to help them continue their journey. The piece then shifts to a local character Ashtabula Johnson and tells a rambling tale of his encounters, a horse sale, and a staged warehouse caper involving Philo Martinburger and a man named Johnson.
On a Jeter farm near Keytesville a tenant's house burned while the mother was away. Two young children, ages two and five months, were left inside and perished in the flames. The house and belongings were destroyed, and only charred remains were found. The bodies were brought to town for burial on Wednesday evening.
