Californians and Lincoln Clash Over California Patronage
Correspondent recalls a confrontation at the White House on a Saturday in March 1861. Californians split into Baker and anti Baker factions. An anti Baker delegation delivered a bitter protest speech to President Lincoln, who burned the paper and affirmed Baker's support while inviting office recommendations. Crowd reaction echoed through the White House corridors.
