A 29 year old Grand Island Nebraska man hijacked Frontier Flight 101 at gunpoint in Grand Island and demanded 3 million dollars parachutes and the release of a Georgia bank robbery suspect. Negotiations via FBI and FAA radio began in Atlanta as 30 passengers remained aboard at first.
Roger Lyle Lentz, 31, of Marquette, seized a small private twin engine plane from Grand Island airport in April 1976. He held Pilot Robert Blair and mechanic Harlan Hillers hostage and was armed with a shotgun. Lentz was killed in a shootout with FBI agents after the plane landed at Stapleton Airport. He sought a transfer to a commercial jet bound for Mexico while awaiting sentencing on a third offense drunk driving charge.
Thomas Michael Hannan, a 1966 Grand Island Central Catholic graduate and Vietnam veteran, is depicted in two contrasting images. One shows a typical youth from Sioux Falls who joined his local school and community, while the other portrays a roaming misfit linked to a man under arrest in a bank case. Hannan’s parents entered seclusion after the Frontier Airlines hijacking, later moving to Atlanta to discuss the incident with authorities. His friend called him a "very, very good boy," and officials note a brief university stint at Nebraska-Lincoln in 1966 before a possible marriage and divorce with no reported children.
Witnesses recount the boarding rush as Frontier Flight 101 was hijacked by Thomas Hannan. Bob Drehr of Grand Island described ducking away after spotting a gun and deciding to get out of harm’s way.
