The United States reported a 3.1 billion foreign trade deficit for October the highest on record. Exports totaled 9.2 billion, the lowest since March 1976, while imports reached 12.3 billion. Officials cite the East Coast and Gulf Coast dock strike as the main factor.
Democrat Hess Dyas declared his run for Congress in the 1st District focusing on agriculture as the sole issue. The Lincoln resident born in Omaha described his prior losses as farmerlike resilience and noted improved name recognition and financial backing within his 100 percent parity platform.
In Southampton England thousands watched Saturday night programs as a voice calling itself a galactic visitor interrupted broadcasts. Police had no idea who w hat or what caused the anomaly but warned the speaker could face charges if traced. Panicked viewers flooded lines and police dispatched to calm an elderly woman at home.
Senator John McClellan of Arkansas, in office since 1943, died in his sleep at age 81. He had announced a 1978 retirement, ending a 50-year career marked by aggressive crime investigations and later leadership of the Senate Appropriations Committee. Salisbury Rhodesia. The government said ground and air forces destroyed two guerrilla bases in Mozambique and killed at least 1,200 black nationalists. The raids penetrated up to 132 miles inside Mozambique with one soldier killed and eight wounded. The communique framed the actions as self defense and noted no clashes with Mozambique troops.
A three minute on air interruption on Independent Southern Television featured a voice calling itself Asteron and urging Earth to destroy weapons and live in peace or leave the galaxy. Investigators mention possible transmitter link or access to Rowbridge or Hannington lines with Orson Welles style panic. Asteron could face a 360 fine under the Wireless Telegraphy Act if convicted.
Officials indicate tentative approval of a Justice Department drafted plan to strengthen gun control. The proposal, pending Congress next year, would ban easily concealable handguns by size and use criteria, require dealers to verify buyer residence laws, implement pre clearance to check felon status, and extend reporting to secondary handgun transfers.
Prime Minister Menahem Begin announced that Israeli representatives will attend a Cairo preliminary peace conference next weekend. He named Dr. Eliahu Ben Elissar and Meir Rosenne as delegates, following Sadat’s invitation and U.N. ambassador mediation.
