The Soviet Union purchased 601,600 metric tons of U.S. corn under a long term pact, with delivery by Sept 30 next year. This sale follows a 100,000 ton wheat sale and brings total 1977-78 grain purchases to over three million tons, about half the minimum in the agreement.
A stubborn four hour blaze at Traders Grain Co in Nebraska City destroyed about 50 000 bushels of corn soybeans and milo along with a large headhouse.
