UNL Team Drills Hole Through Ross Ice Shelf
An NSF sponsored Antarctic expedition coordinated by UNL's Ross Ice Shelf Project drilled the first hole 420 meters through the Ross Ice Shelf to the sea. Drilling site is about 400 miles from McMurdo Station and 300 miles from the ice edge. The nine hour melt used a 25 foot rocket torch by James Browning of Browning Engineering.
