State Sen. Bill Brennan was reelected president of the Nebraska AFL-CIO after Sam Scarpello withdrew to maintain unity. Victor Meyers won secretary treasurer, defeating Rex King 294 to 117 with broad backing from building trades unions while King drew support mainly from CWA and electrical workers.
Lester Lant completed a 150 pound birdhouse this year replacing his father's 1931 tower top. The structure will feature colored glass panes lights and a fountain attracting onlookers and showcasing his passion for avian housing.
City Hall trims tax rate by 1.28 mills from 27.44 to near 26.16 mills, a larger cut than earlier 1.1 mill estimates. A mill equals $1 per $1000 of assessed value, with taxable property set at 35 percent of actual value.
Washington-Frank Johnson Jr an Alabama U S district judge was picked by President Carter to lead the FBI awaiting Senate approval. Bell noted Johnson a Republican who faced threats cross burnings and a 1967 bombing over desegregation rulings while gaining a reputation as tough but fair and a conservative hillbilly trial lawyer. Johnson has long been in the public eye for landmark desegregation voting and mental health rulings.
James Baylor, 53, is the new director of Nebraska’s Political Accountability and Disclosure Commission. He says the Sunshine Law requires candidates to reveal assets and income sources, gifts, and debts. Baylor aims to balance public right to know with candidate privacy while shaping rules before the 1978 elections.
Nebraska power industry leaders on the joint task force state there is no need for taxpayer financed outside consultants to study the sector. They urge patience through year end to let the industry work out its problems before any costly statewide study.
