Hunger strike marks 50th Easter uprising anniversary
Eighteen young Irish militants began a hunger strike in Dublin and Belfast supporters as Ireland marked the 50th anniversary of the 1916 Easter uprising. They urged government to revive revolutionary ideals, lament Gaelic decline, and oppose partition and economic dependence on Britain. The protest included Dublin University students and others who laid a wreath at Cuplaine statue and referenced forgotten 1916 ideals. Mairtin O Cadhain criticized the government for selling out aims and fearing Gaelic language spread.
