Prom The Kalida Venture Denocrate Congressional Convention
Delegates from Defiance, Putnam, Lucas, Van Wert, Mercer, Hardin, Allen, Paulding, and surrounding counties met at the fort house in Kalida on August 27 to organize the fifth district Democratic convention. James Myers was elected president with W A Brown and W A Woodward as secretaries, committees were formed on credentials and apportionment, and officers for the convention were named, with rules for nomination by ballot and a two-thirds majority. The body adopted platform resolutions supporting Polk era policies, river and harbor veto justification, French spoliation veto, distribution of national funds, tariff reform, banking opposition, and military officer appointments, and adjourned.
